2022 Fairfax County Hub Updates
We met our neighbors at NAACP’s Family Fun Day on June 14th, and at two Juneteenth events, in Vienna and Mount Vernon! A big thank-you to everyone who volunteered and told people about FACS! We celebrated at the annual Awards Ceremony on June 16th. We love meeting new people who want to work on climate resilience and environmental justice.
We’re celebrating that the County restored the requested funding for the Park Authority, and is considering making all Connector buses free for every rider. Access to green space and public transportation are essentials, not “extras” in quality of life and to reduce carbon emissions. County staff will give a report on the benefits and costs in the fall.

Resilient Fairfax’s open comment period ended June 15th; several of us noted that plans for cooling for unhoused people needed to be included. It’s a comprehensive overview, and FACS hopes to see specifics and timelines soon. It’s an open question whether this ambitious and vital work can be done across 19 departments with the staffing levels available.
FACS Fairfax is also forming a Solid Waste Management team, designing a program to help people know what to recycle, right at the sorting point, in multi-family dwellings. The Solid Waste Team has a long list of ideas: join us to make them happen!
