Legislative Agenda Proposal Deadline is This Friday

The Alliance's annual Legislative Agenda is crafted in partnership with early childhood organizations that are advancing policy solutions through the legislative process. Applicants are invited to submit proposals to Matt Levin, Alliance Executive Director, at matt@vecaa.org by Friday, September 27 at 12:00 pm. Visit the Alliance website for details on the process timeline and application scoring system, plus helpful links and downloadable application materials.

After all proposals are received, the Steering Committee will consider the applications and work together to set the 2020 Legislative Agenda. The timeline for this process is as follows:

  • September 27 at 12:00 pm – deadline for applications to be submitted
  • October 17 – Alliance Steering Committee meets to consider applications
  • November – Alliance releases outline version of 2019 Legislative Agenda
  • December – Alliance Steering Committee approves final version of 2019 Legislative Agenda
  • January – Alliance publishes and distributes copies of the Agenda to legislators and administrators

The Alliance at BBF Regional Council Meetings

In the past few weeks, Matt and Charlie have attended several Building Bright Futures (BBF) Regional Council meetings to share updates about the outcomes during the 2019 legislative session, and information on the upcoming legislative session and the process for setting the Alliance’s annual Legislative Agenda. These meetings have been a wonderful opportunity to engage with service providers and other professionals in each region, some of whom we don’t get to see as often as we would like.

Alliance staff will be attending more meetings in the coming weeks and returning to some BBF regions at fall and early winter meetings to share information about the issues on the 2020 Legislative Agenda and offer advocacy training. Stay tuned to the Alliance newsletter and website for more details.

Legislative Activity on Early Childhood Issues Continues

While the legislature is adjourned until January, some legislative activity does continue in a variety of settings. There are some ongoing special committees – like the Advisory Council on Child Poverty and Strengthening Families and the Joint Legislative Child Protection Oversight Committee – that are set up to meet off-session. These committees include both legislators and members of the public.

In other cases, the legislature has created short-term “summer study” committees to look at specific issues. And this summer and fall, the Senate Committee on Economic Development, Housing and General Affairs has launched a fact-finding tour around the state to discuss housing issues.

All of these meetings are open to the public, and Alliance staff and members attend many of them. You can find out more information about the meetings at the Legislature’s meeting webpage.
