The New Jersey Work Environment Council (WEC) is a coalition of 70 labor, community, and environmental organizations advocating for safe, secure jobs and a healthy, sustainable environment. WEC is an affiliate of the National Council for Occupational Safety and Health. WEC works in multiple issue areas that are at the intersection of the labor and environmental movement. WEC is the nation’s longest standing state labor/environmental coalition and is an affiliate of the National Council for Occupational Safety and Health.

Description

WEC seeks a full-time bi-lingual occupational health & safety (level 1) trainer to conduct health and safety trainings, with an emphasis on COVID prevention and awareness for workers. Audience includes workers, hard to reach workers, unions, employers, and community organizations.

This position will help WEC provide worker-oriented training, building the regional health and safety movement and developing working relationships with labor, environmental and community organizations. In addition, this position will also help WEC advocate for stronger workplace protections. The breakdown between training and advocacy is approximately 70% training and 30% advocacy.

This is a 12-month term position. The position will start as virtual and when deemed appropriate, it will move to in-person. The WEC office is located in Trenton. The position will start as soon as possible and ideally by April 30. Interviews will be conducted on a rolling basis.

Duties

 Primary responsibilities include:

  • Work with Special Project Director and other staff to achieve measurable goals within specific timelines and monitoring the effectiveness of the training.
  • Prepare for, organize and conduct participatory health and safety training sessions, to identify, prevent and address a variety of workplace health and safety hazards – including COVID – using the Systems of Safety approach to incident investigations.
  • Identify and develop worker-leaders.
  • Work with members and allies on planning advocacy campaigns.
  • Communicate with a diverse audience including policy makers
  • Travel to onsite trainings, mostly in state (occasional overnight and multi-day sessions), meetings, conferences, seminars, or other meetings. (Note: All travel is currently suspended due to COVID.)Additional responsibilities include:
  • Maintain project documentation, help write reports for funders and assist in the development of content for grant proposals.
  • Achieve and maintain appropriate professional credentials and certifications
  • Participate in staff meetings and contribute to organizational needs such as communications, social media, fundraising and membership recruitment.

Qualifications

  • Fluency in Spanish and English.
  • Excellent facilitation, written and oral communication, interpersonal and organizational skills
  • Workplace safety and health background and knowledge
  • Experience working with unions, low-wage workers, and community organizations
  • Demonstrated ability to develop curricula and educational materials
  • Organizational and program development skills
  • Experience providing training to workers and adult learners, using popular education/interactive approaches
  • Demonstrated leadership quality and be able to work with minimal supervision
  • Knowledge of MS Office and Zoom

Credentials

  • Must possess a valid driver license and have a means of transportation to various training locations.
  • A BA/BS in related field (preferred but may be substituted with an OSHA 501 certificate in general industry).
