The segments and their objectives are below. Learn about how the media affects public understanding of nursing. There is a requested section on tactics to overcome diversity and bias, and then in the afternoon, we will do real-time practice honing our individual advocacy skills and begin the creation of a media project to increase public understanding of nursing.
9:00 - 10:00 am
Participants will be able to identify the full spectrum of nursing stereotypes;
Participants will be able to recognize how stereotypes affect how people think;
Participants will be able to explain the value of nursing to the public.
10:10 - 11:00 am
Participants will be able to recognize how the media affects thinking and health behaviors;
Participants will be able to explore the connection between decades of negative media;
depictions of nursing and the ability of nursing to embrace its full potential and practice with true autonomy;
Participants will be able explore how media-fueled undervaluation of nursing has led to underfunding of the profession, from inadequate resources for faculty to poor nurse-to-patient ratios, which can lead to healthcare errors, failure-to-rescue situations, and poor outcomes.
11:10 am - 12:00 pm
Participants will be able to identify the potential for bias in clinical and educational settings, such that members of less empowered groups may not feel sufficiently valued as colleagues or receive adequate care as patients;
Participants will explore being open to welcoming, defending, endorsing, and amplifying the concerns of people who are outside the mainstream culture;
Participants will be able to be inquisitive and learn about different cultures through conversations and exploration of media to enhance understanding of different perspectives.
1:00 - 2:30 pm
Participants will be able to explore strategies of persuasion used in advocacy campaigns to effect change, including in public policy and the media;
Participants will be able to identify and analyze health problems from their own lives that they would like to address through advocacy;
Participants will be able to begin an advocacy campaign to resolve a health problem, design a plan of action and send out a first communication to influence decision-makers and effect change.
2:45 - 4:00 pm
Participants will be able to identify the full range of media that can be created that can affect public thinking;
Participants will be able to examine their own talents and interests to decide what type of media they would like to create to improve understanding of nursing: (e.g. social media, video, radio, stand up, music, toys, costumes, advertisements, writing, publicity…);
Participants will be able to collaborate to plan and begin a media advocacy project that will improve public health and/or understanding of nursing.
Presentation to nursing deans: Synergis will be offering a periodic hour-long Nursing Leadership Forum for all Synergis partner nurse leaders. Our upcoming forum will feature Sandy Summers, the executive director of The Truth About Nursing, www.truthaboutnursing.org. Sandy is the co-author of the book Saving Lives: Why the Media’s Portrayal of Nursing Puts Us All at Risk. She speaks frequently about empowering nurses to improve public perception of the profession, and her sessions are always both inspirational and informative regarding the state of nursing.
This free forum will be an invitation-only event and we will have time for questions/discussion. The forum will be offered online via Teams or Zoom. We are inviting all nursing deans from our partner schools, your nursing program directors (all nursing programs, not just those in partnership with Synergis), and lead faculty involved in program development with Synergis. Strategic Research Alliance: The University of Sheffield in partnership with The Royal College of Nursing
Sandy Summers presented to a panel with UK nursing leaders as part of the Strategic Research Alliance, in partnership with the Royal College of Nursing, held at the University of Sheffield. Nursing professors organized a consensus development project from 2018-2023 and are conducting "a new programme of research activity, supporting the development of nursing research evidence and nurse research capacity. Ultimately the work will seek to influence public policy and promote better outcomes for the population and the NHS (the UK's National Health Service) workforce." In 2020 the Alliance is addressing five questions in UK nursing care, one of which is: "What are the best ways of informing and engaging the public about nursing?" Sandy Summers, RN, MSN, MPH, attended to present on this question and engage with a lay panel via Zoom on October 19, 2020 in Sheffield, England. See more information on the Strategic Research Alliance web pages.
“Image of Nursing: Unleash the Power of the Media” Nigerian Workshop
On October 28, 2020, Truth About Nursing director Sandy Summers served as a featured speaker for the 5-day online media workshop “Image of Nursing: Unleash the Power of the Media.” Sandy will present: "Media portrayal of nurses: How strategic leadership can transform the image of nursing." Sandy presented why and how nurses can develop a strategic plan to transform the media, how to address negative portrayals, and practical ways nurses can collaborate with the media to transform the public's understanding of nursing. This is a 5-day training session put together by the formidable Josiah Jackson-Okesola, who is a member of The Truth About Nursing's advisory panel and who is leading the effort to transform the media's portrayal of nursing in Central Africa.

Widener University's Nightingale Ceremony
May 16, 2019 - Truth About Nursing director Sandy Summers was thrilled to be the speaker at the Nightingale ceremony for graduating seniors of the Widener University School of Nursing! It was held at The Springfield Country Club in Pennsylvania 19064) May 16. Widener is located in Chester, Pennsylvania. See Sandy's speech:
Recommendation from Brenda Kucirka, who brought Sandy to Widener:
"I highly recommend inviting Sandy Summers to share the work of The Truth About Nursing with your organization. Sandy brings a powerful message and a call to action for nurses to advocate for the profession. Sandy was the invited guest speaker for our Nightingale Ceremony. She reminded us of the history of nursing and the contributions nurses make to supporting public health and the wellbeing of our communities. Students left feeling empowered to step into their new role, inspired by the work of nurses and the significance of their choice to join the profession.
For nurses in the audience and faculty, she reminded us of why we chose nursing as a profession and the imperative we have to shape the profession as she shared the "Truth About Nursing". Feedback from students, guests and faculty was very positive. It was essential information for our new graduates as they transition to practice. Sandy is an excellent speaker who delivers a message that all nurses would benefit from hearing. Her call to action is the antidote to anyone who is feeling disillusioned about our profession or just needs a reminder of just how much power we have."

From symposium host MarySue Heilemann: "We have received a great deal of positive feedback from those in attendance at the May 12th conference, signaling a wonderful increase of interest in the topic. Part of the reason that this event was so successful was your presentation, your input, and your presence at the symposium.
Therefore, I want to specifically express my gratitude for all that you did to help create this inaugural event, Sandy. No doubt we made history on May 12 at UCLA as we brought together film scholars, film makers, media scholars, as well as leaders, practitioners, activists, researchers, and scholars from nursing, to focus specifically on the issue of nurses and the media. It was absolutely fantastic to watch you bring the audience to the height of attention through your analysis of depictions of nurses on television, film, and media advertisements. The media clips you chose were extremely effective. Your careful analysis and critique of the various ways that television shows depicted nurses brought new insight to an audience that was hungry to learn. It is easy to see that your devoted scholarship on these issues has produced new knowledge; your work is timely and important. The entirety of your presentation on May 12th gave perspective to the overall situation of the impact of these images in the US and internationally. This is a valuable contribution to our understanding and a novel point reflecting your unique scholarship related to these issues. Indeed, it was our honor to be able to hear your ideas first hand on May 12th. I know that many attendees lined up to talk to you throughout the day and we are so glad that you took the time to entertain their questions and comments. Many thanks!
On behalf of Dean Courtney Lyder and the UCLA School of Nursing, I would like to thank you for the crucial role you played at our inaugural UCLA conference, “Media Images and Screen Representations and of Nurses.” Thank you for making this a priority, for not only putting your fine mind into preparation for our event but your heart and soul as well, and for following through with a fantastic presentation, from start to finish!" see the full letter...
