Safer Homes, Safer Communities Initiative

Since 2013, the Middlesex Sheriff's Office has partnered with local police departments and community groups to support gun buybacks in cities and towns across Middlesex County. These community-led buybacks bring together leaders from a wide range of civic life: high school students, public health professionals and faith leaders have all worked with public safety partners to host events in their hometowns.

In June 2016, the Middlesex Sheriff's Office partnered with the Arlington, Belmont, Cambridge, Somerville and Watertown Police Departments to host a regional gun buyback as part of the "Safer Homes, Safer Communities" initiative. This month-long effort resulted in 150 unwanted firearms accepted throughout five communities.

In total, 15 communities have hosted 33 buyback events since 2013, with 1925 total guns safely and securely destroyed in that time.

Individuals with questions regarding a specific buyback are encouraged to contact their local police department; those with questions regarding the regional "Safer Homes, Safer Communities" initiative are welcome to contact the Middlesex Sheriff's Office for further information.
