SUSTAINABLE BRAND BOMA JEWELRY ACHIEVES B CORP CERTIFICATION

With its recent certification, Seattle-based Boma Jewelry officially joins the ranks of less than 20 certified jewelry companies worldwide after completing a multi-year certification process.

August 13, 2021

Seattle, WA - Boma Jewelry, a leading social purpose company, is proud to announce that it has officially achieved B Corp Certification status, meeting the highest standards of verified social and environmental performance, public transparency, and accountability. With its new certification, Boma joins a movement of companies committed to using business as a force for good. The company is now among an esteemed group of nearly 4,000 mission-driven companies in the United States and around the globe that have made a commitment to making decisions that lead to positive impacts on their employees, customers, suppliers, community, and the environment. Within the jewelry industry, there are less than 20 brands that are B Corp certified. Boma is Seattle’s first and only B Corp certified jewelry company.

As a family-run, 40-year old company with deep roots in the AAPI community, Boma has a long history of dedication to its values-centered business. Soon after its founding in 1981, the owners built a factory in Bangkok, Thailand to further their commitment to the artisans and silversmiths who make Boma products each day. As a result of its factory ownership, Boma Jewelry has been able to ensure fair wages, safe working conditions, and transparency within its supply chain since 1986.

The B Corp certification process is administered by B Lab, a nonprofit organization that uses a confidential platform to assess a company’s operations and business model. The standards are rigorous and only 4% of applicants who complete the impact assessment test score well enough to become certified. During Boma Jewelry’s three-year assessment, the evaluators considered everything from the source of precious metals in the supply chain to the brand’s current environmental policies and community engagement impact.

Suzanne Vetillart, CEO of Boma Jewelry, is eager to continue her engagement with the B Corp community as a business leader advocating for certification among communities where B Corp remains largely unknown. “The long, arduous process of becoming a B Corp was an invaluable experience for Boma. As challenging as it was to go through, it trained us to be conscious and aware of a more holistic approach to business leadership, one that actively considers the triple bottom line: people, planet, and profit,” shared Vetillart.

Over the years, Boma Jewelry has focused on the triple bottom line and made significant investments to key initiatives including the 2016 creation of the Boma Girl Fund designed to formally commit funds to the families of over 200 Boma factory employees each year, the 2020 BIPOC Grant Program for independent jewelry designers created to provide mentorship and production resources, and the 2021 announcement that the company’s factory would begin the switch to renewable sources of energy with the goal of becoming net zero by 2025.
