Meet Meghan Brown Saavedra

Meghan recently served as Country Coordinator for Young Adults in Global Mission (YAGM) in Mexico, a service program of the ELCA. During her time in Mexico City, Meghan was drawn to the ELCA’s theology of mission called accompaniment as a way to be open and present to the beauty, complexity and holiness of whatever place in which we find ourselves. She now finds herself as LVC’s Program Manager of the East and Admissions!

Q: Why are you excited about your new role with LVC?

A: I am excited to join Lutheran Volunteer Corps because, like many times throughout history, we seem to be at a turning point in our country.  In the midst of increased inequity, injustice, and racism, how will we, as a society rise to the challenges that lay ahead of us?  Will we embrace the lies we are told-that there is not enough (scarcity), that we are not enough (insufficiency), and that all is pointless (hopelessness)?  Or can we choose another way-that embraces our humanity over productivity, community over the individual, and humility over our desire to be right?

Q: What values stood out to you?

A: I was particularly attracted to LVCs dedication to creating inclusive community and fighting white supremacy.  I also know that such work requires a life-long commitment and is better done within a community that can challenge, encourage and hold one accountable.  I am humbled to work with volunteers who are committed to living out these values in their placements and their communities.   I am excited to accompany and support volunteers on this journey, whether they are just beginning, or have been engaged in this work for a long time.

Q: What are you hopeful about?

A: My own year as a Young Adult Volunteer with the Presbyterian Church (USA) on the US-Mexico border in 2006 changed the course of my life and continues to be a big part of who I am and what I believe about myself, the world and God.    As a pastor, I believe we are called to do justice, love mercy, and walk humbly with our God.  It can be messy and complicated, but done together, we can find purpose, joy and great hope along the way!
