PORTLAND (WGME) -- A rally on the steps of Portland City Hall Thursday denounced domestic terrorism and white supremacists.
Several rallies have been held across Maine since the mass shootings in El Paso, Texas, under investigation by the FBI as domestic terrorism, with the suspect posting a white supremacist manifesto online before the shooting.
People involved in the event also are pushing for stronger gun control measures.
"We're out here to help raise awareness of what folks can do to help make Maine and the country a safer place through supporting common sense gun safety legislation," Maine Gun Safety Coalition Executive Director Geoff Bickford said.
The group wants Congress to end its recess to vote on a bill for universal background checks.
