What’s Current: Jamie Lee Curtis gives her Oscar ‘they/them’ pronouns in support of her trans-identified son

  • On Tuesday, Jamie Lee Curtis told Today show hosts Hoda Kotb and Savannah Guthrie that she will be referring to her Oscar statue using they/them pronouns “in support of my daughter Ruby.” The actress’ son, previously known as Thomas, announced he identifies as transgender in People magazine in 2021. On Sunday, Curtis won her first Oscar for her supporting role in Everything Everywhere All at Once, telling press backstage:

“Obviously, I would like to see a lot more women be nominated so that there’s gender parity in all the areas and all the branches, and I think we’re getting there. We’re not anywhere near there [yet].”

  • Drew Barrymore was blasted on Twitter after kneeling before trans-identified TikTok star Dylan Mulvaney on her show, The Drew Barrymore Show. During the conversation, Mulvaney tells the actress he “isn’t trying to do anything but be myself and be happy,” after which the two commiserate about “combating hate.”
  • The Vermont Principals Association (VPA) has banned a Vermont private school from participating in VPA-sanctioned tournaments, saying the school failed to meet the association’s policies on race, gender, and disability awareness. The Mid Vermont Christian School (MVCS) withdrew their girls basketball team from the Division IV state tournament, refusing to play against a trans-identified male on the opposing team. MVCS head of school Vicky Fogg said:

“We believe playing against an opponent with a biological male jeopardizes the fairness of the game and the safety of our players. Allowing biological males to participate in women’s sports sets a bad precedent for the future of women’s sports in general.”
