DALE McDANIEL Obituary

MCDANIEL Dale Eugene McDaniel Dale Eugene McDaniel passed away peacefully on December 12 at the age of 81. He was born on August 2, 1939 to Guy and Doris (Welsher) McDaniel in Des Moines, Iowa. He graduated from Des Moines Technical High School, earned his bachelor's degree from Illinois Institute of Technology in 1961, and a Masters in Public Administration from University of Indiana in 1971. Dale spent his career employed by the Federal government, at the US Coast Guard and the Federal Aviation Administration. Dale was married to Deana Jean Brewster in 1970, to whom he was devoted until her death in 2005. Dale was fun - a delightful man with a quick wit and dry sense of humor, who often had an amusing surprise up his sleeve. He always seemed to have a smile on his face and a twinkle in his eye, and was a real joy to be around. He had a way of making everyone he met feel truly special and appreciated, as though there was no one else in the world who was more important to him. Dale was a loyal fan of the Washington Nationals and football team, and was quite vocal when they played well ... or not so well. As smart as he was witty, Dale was an expert in Civil War history, and enjoyed planning visits to National Parks with his wife and family. He was a wonderful host and guide when his family came to visit him in DC. In his later years, it seemed that Dale was off on a far-flung adventure more often than he was home. From Australia and New Zealand to an African safari - from South America to nearly every European capital - and cruises too numerous to count, Dale traveled with his friends, and made more friends along the way. Dale was also an avid bridge player, especially competitive duplicate bridge, and won many tournaments. And evident to all, Dale was a kind and generous soul with a dedication for helping others, particularly the homeless. Dale was very active in his community, generous with both his resources and his time. A devout Christian, Dale sang with volume during hymns and was devoted to his church, serving multiple times as council president of Luther Place Church, as well as on the boards of N Street Village, Bread for the City, and Emmaus Services for the Aging. If ever there was a life well lived, it was Dale's, and he was loved and admired by many. Dale was preceded in death by his wife, Deana Jean Brewster, his parents, and his brothers James and Dennis. He is survived by his beloved sister, Jeri McDaniel (Edwin), his dear sisters-in-law, Norma McDaniel, Janet Brewster, and Nancy Martin; and brothers-in-law David and Dennis Brewster; many nieces, nephews, grandnieces, and grandnephews who cherished their Uncle Dale, and countless friends. A memorial service will be held at a later date in 2021, which will be open to all of his family and friends.
