A Year in Review: GCE-US 2020 Highlights

The Global Campaign for Education-US (GCE-US) has made great strides toward its mission of promoting education as a basic human right and creating political will in the United States and internationally to ensure global, quality education, which is at the core of all human development. This year, the global pandemic has made our work to ensure education for all even more critical.

Global Education Partnerships & Advocacy

  • Your voice and support have tremendous impact! This week, Congress voted to fund international basic education at $950 million for Fiscal Year 2021, including $125 million to support the Global Partnership for Education, $25 million for Education Cannot Wait, and $150 million designated for girls’ education in conflict settings. With $75 million of additional basic education funding over Fiscal Year 2020 enacted levels, USAID and its partners can better support children and youth who are out-of-school around the world.
  • GCE-US sent recommendations for U.S. leadership in global education to incoming policymakers after the U.S. election. With more than 90 signatories, the recommendations urged the U.S. to support communities to conduct inclusive, accessible remote learning and the safe reopening of schools. In response to the recommendations, GCE-US is meeting with incoming policymakers as they review progress and plan for the next four years to advocate in support of international education, inclusive education, pre-primary education, girls' education, and education for all children.

Kakali Banik, Senior Education Advisor at USAID, shared pre-primary education tools underway at USAID. Henry Malumo, Campaign Manager for the Zambia ECD CDF Financing Campaign, spoke about a new campaign to promote the importance of ECD with parliamentarians and the general public in Zambia. What We're Reading & Watching

Reaching the Most Marginalized: A Human Right to Inclusive Education

We co-hosted the Disability Inclusive Education Forum on December 4 with Education Cannot Wait, the Government of Norway, Special Olympics, International Disability Alliance, International Disability and Development Consortium, Inter-agency Network for Education in Emergencies, Global Action on Disability Network, Commonwealth Children and Youth Disability Network, Light for the World, Jesuit Refugee Service, and Include Me Too. The speakers demonstrated that the basic right to education, especially for children and young people with disabilities in emergency settings, has been impacted and we must act.

Advocate Eddie Ndopu, who is planning to be the first person with a disability in space, reminded attendees of the Forum that human rights apply to all and that denying access to education and opportunity is an injustice:

“We have an attitudinal problem and a failure of the public policy imagination to account for the full experiences that children with disabilities in vulnerable contexts embody...This is not a question of misfortune; it is a question of injustice...institutional and structural exclusion and oppression. If we are to really reach those furthest behind, we require a moment of reckoning that society has let down children with disabilities. And we have to act to change that ...now.”  >> Learn more here.

In a year when the impact of quality education for all has been felt in every part of the globe, an investment in #Education4All is more timely, more relevant, and more needed than ever before. As millions of children remain out of school, and as they return to classrooms, GCE-US ensures every child has access to the resources they need to be successful, especially those who are most vulnerable to falling behind or not returning to school - girls, children with disabilities, children from displaced populations, and other marginalized groups.
