Gainesville city commission approves part of Northwest Eighth Avenue as Memorial Mile

A new way to honor veterans is coming to north central Florida.

This after a group made a request to Gainesville's city commission to designate Northwest eighth avenue as “Memorial Mile."

People with Veterans for Peace have been installing memorial headstones since 2007.

Earlier this year, the commission approved the request and decided to mark “Memorial Mile" on the avenue between the intersection of 23rd street and 34th street.

“The city of Gainesville, unfortunately, has community members who have perished in wars and given their life the ultimate sacrifice,” said Shelby Taylor, city of Gainesville communications director. “The commission agreed that it was an appropriate move to officially recognize memorial mile in a matter that honored their spirit."

Veterans for Peace will be hosting an unveiling event for the street signs on Veterans Day. The time for the event is being finalized.
