During the summer months far too many children experience increased food insecurity, compromising their health and ability to thrive during summer break and beyond. The limited reach of the Summer Nutrition Programs creates the need for the Summer Electronic Benefits Transfer Program (Summer EBT), a complementary program that has been proven to effectively combat summer hunger. Summer EBT provides additional resources to purchase food during the summer months for families whose children are certified to receive free or reduced-price school meals during the school year.
We urge Congress to extend Summer EBT program permanently for children eligible for free and reduced-price school meals, as included in the American Families Plan, in either Child Nutrition Reauthorization or forthcoming economic recovery legislation.
