The most universally-accessible park in America will be in Iowa, officials say
A new multi-million-dollar recreation area will someday offer universal access to nature for people of all abilities, Polk County Conservation announced on Wednesday.The county has unveiled plans for $8.1 million park enhancements for a fully accessible waterfront at Easter Lake Park. The North Shore Recreation Area was developed with the singular goal of creating the most universally designed, accessible park in the country, officials said.“We are laser-focused on drawing all people to enjoy nature and recreate outdoors,” said Kami Rankin, Deputy Director of Polk County Conservation. “When people feel safe and secure they are more likely to do just that – explore nature. With this project, we are creating a safer, more welcoming space for people of all abilities.”This project includes accessible playground equipment, zero-entry ramps to allow people with limited mobility access to the water, a full inventory of adaptive recreation equipment, extra wide sidewalks to usher wheelchair users and their families across the shorefront and a de-escalation room for people with sensory input disorder.Athene USA is among the organizations that provided funding. The state of Iowa provided a $2.5 million grant through Destination Iowa. Construction is set to begin this fall. A grand opening is planned for spring 2024.Click below to watch more news:
