DESERT HOT SPRINGS — Several local and state political figures and activists will be honored in connection with International Peace Day, which is Saturday, Sept. 21.

International Day of Peace, sometimes unofficially known as World Peace Day, is a United Nations-sanctioned holiday observed.

On Sunday, Sept. 22, Veterans for Peace will hold its 14th annual Peace Day ceremony. Veterans for Peace holds the only Peace Day event in the Inland Empire, according to organizer Tom Swann Hernandez. Co-sponsors this year are Veterans for Peace (VFP), AMVETS Post 66 and Occupy Coachella Valley.

Riverside County Fourth District Supervisor V. Manuel Perez will be the special guest. Dale Olansky will deliver the keynote address.

The International Peace Day Awards Ceremony will be held Sunday, Sept. 22 from 6 p.m. to 8 p.m. in the Joshua Tree Room of Miracle Springs Resort and Spa, 10625 Palm Drive, Desert Hot Springs,

This year’s honorees are:

  • Yolanda Brown
  • Oscar Ortiz
  • East West Alliance
  • Salton Sea Coalition
  • Megan Beaman Jacinto
  • AMVETS Express

  • Linda Starr

International Day of Peace honoree Beaman Jacinto has been chosen Elected Official of the Year.

Beaman Jacinto fights for justice with unparalleled sensitivity, experience, vigor, and creativity, according to Swann Hernandez.  She is a member of the Coachella City Council.

Beaman Jacinto Law P.C. is rooted in the notion that all people deserve access to justice and enforcement of basic rights, and works closely with clients to achieve that goal. Beaman Jacinto Law P.C.’s practice is founded on years of advocacy and activism in diverse communities, including the recent many years of successful legal and other representation of rural communities and clients in Coachella Valley, Imperial Valley, Inland Empire, and other parts of California.

Beaman Jacinto Law P.C. represents individuals, communities, and organizations in enforcing their basic legal and human rights in the areas of employment, land use, housing, immigration, civil rights, and policy — all with the understanding of the larger struggles for justice and community health in California and nationwide.

A Celebration of Life will include Carolyn Krause, Kathleen Barrio, Marnel Farley, and Paul Krassne.

There will be music from JB and free light food.
