Second Harvest Food Bank of Louisiana which serves the greater New Orleans area said they’ve been extremely busy post-Ida both with receiving donations and distributing food. Second Harvest Spokesperson Jay Vise said they are helping people in some of the most hurricane-impacted areas of southeast Louisiana.
“People who just until a few days ago, were very self-sufficient, are now relying on strangers and reaching out to get help and because of the donations we’re receiving we’re able to help as many people as possible,” said Vise.
Vise said they’ve also seen donations and assistance come in from all over the US along with food donations from other food banks to help assist those in need from Hurricane Ida. For example, donations from Feeding America Foodbanks in Texas, Florida, and middle Tennessee.
“One thing these folks have in common, they’ve all be through disasters as well. Middle Tennessee just had those dramatic flash floods, every part of Florida has been through what we are going through, Hurricane Harvey in Texas as well,” said Vise.
All of the Feeding America Food Banks in the state have been extremely active with the pandemic and now with Ida response. Vise said they’ve been out to heavily impacted areas like LaPlace and Lafourche providing aid and they are only able to do so due to donations.
“It’s because someone donated their times, products to us, or donated money. For everybody who’s making this possible, thank you, thank you so much,” said Vise.
