LGBTQ+ Safety Online

Looking for ways to keep the conversation going about LGBTQ+ issues with your ERG, community group, or PFLAG chapter? Welcome to Something to Talk About, a monthly series designed by PFLAG National’s Straight for Equality program to create conversation about LGBTQ+ issues. Each month we’ll offer an article on LGBTQ+ topics and suggest a few questions you can use to lead a discussion.

We hosted a conversation about this article as a part of PFLAG Connects and Something to Talk About Live on Thursday, May 21. Did you miss it? You can still watch it here!

Article:  Queer Subreddit Attacks Are Forcing Moderators To Demand Action

Source: Now This News

Author: Kavish Harja

Questions for Discussion:

  1. The article describes a brigade attack on queer Subreddits in April, that was more aggressive than what is typically seen. What do you think might account for the massive increase in these incidents?
  2. What responsibility do companies like Reddit have to protect moderators and users from these types of brigade attacks? What do you think are reasonable guidelines that might be able to be deployed in these environments?
  3. Do you think that LGBTQ+ users should avoid these kinds of online spaces altogether? Should they gravitate to spaces specifically created for the community and its allies? Can you give any examples of places that you see to be largely safe and inclusive online community spaces for people at this time?
