An overpayment of Supplemental Security Income (SSI) benefits occurs whenever an individual receives more money for a month than the amount that should have been paid by the Social Security Administration (SSA). While the overpayment of benefits can result from a seemingly endless variety of factors, the amount of an overpayment is always the difference between the amount that was received and the amount that was due. Individuals have several options for what they can do when they receive a notice of an overpayment from SSA.
In this webinar, we will explore hypothetical examples to better understand what options an SSI recipient has when they receive a notice of overpayment from SSA. We will also use these hypotheticals to discuss the frequent problems SSI recipients encounter with overpayments, and what steps advocates can take to help tackle these problems.
