With sky high energy prices and rising inflation, paying bills can already put a lot of strain on one’s finances, so when Dave started receiving energy bills for an address that was not his, he did not know what to do. The energy bills he received came from Scottish Power, despite him being with a completely different provider."

The couple, who live in Avonbridge with their two children, say they don't accept that they can possibly be using an average of £500 electricity every month to provide heating and hot water for their modest council house. The couple's records show that one monthly bill was £1500, with others at £777 and £550. On first moving into the house, the couple were told by Falkirk Council that the house uses a Thermaflow boiler, which provides heating and hot water. The couple thought it was a new boiler and did not anticipate any problems. What they didn't know, however, was that just two months earlier a group of tenants with the same heating system had met with Scottish Power and Falkirk Council, demanding to know why their bills had suddenly gone up by 300 per cent."

Telegraph Money first highlighted the giant firm's billing chaos in late December, when we asked if Scottish Power was "the new nPower" - Britain's worst business for service and accuracy of billing. And in the months that followed, readers' feedback suggested it was as bad if not worse than its rival. Huge bills, often months or years late and wildly inaccurate, were only one aspect of Scottish Power's incredible litany of bungles. The firm sent threatening letters and meter-reading requests even when customers had repeatedly pointed out mistakes. In one case, a reader spent several months trying to persuade the firm that he was not dead. Nor has there been obvious improvement over the years. Earlier this month, we detailed how one reader received a bill for £50,489.61 from the energy firm after a glitch led to “round the clock” billing."

Hochul respondsNews Article 2022https://spectrumlocalnews.com/nys/rochester/news/2022/05/27/nyseg--rg-e-request-13-22--rate-hike--gov--hochul-respondss"NYSEG and RG&E are asking for the state to approve a rate hike in the range of 13-22% on customers' bills. Avangrid, the owner of the two companies, says the increase is needed to replace aging infrastructure.

Customers would see their rates go up by $10-$18 on their bills if the rate hike is approved. The company says it would also use the increased revenue to transition to more clean energy sources. The rate increase would impact 1.2 million customers. The New York State Department of Public Service is currently reviewing the request. Gov. Kathy Hochul slammed the request. She issued the following response Thursday:

"It's outrageous and unacceptable that utility companies are proposing the largest rate increase in recent history for more than 1.2 million consumers in Upstate New York. The Department of Public Service is legally required to review all proposed rate increases, and I urge them to scrutinize every number and word of this proposal to protect New York families from unjustified and unfair rate increases. At a time when so many families are struggling because of global economic headwinds and nationwide inflation, I will keep fighting to get money back in the pockets of New Yorkers by accelerating middle-class tax cuts, giving consumers a gas tax holiday that begins next week, and providing rent and utility relief to hundreds of thousands of New Yorkers."

That sum comes as CMP has requested a distribution-side rate increase — all while many Mainers have struggled to afford the cost of power in recent years.

Avangrid increased its net income by 25% in 2022 over the $707 million it made in 2021, according to Wednesday’s financial report. The company made an adjusted net income of $901 million last year, 16% more than in 2021.

An energy company controlled by Iberdrola, a Spanish multinational group, Avangrid has holdings in 24 states. That includes being the parent company of CMP, Maine’s largest utility. CMP has been dogged by repeated last-place rankings in customer satisfaction among similar sized utilities and the company faces a referendum this November spearheaded by the group Our Power over whether it and fellow investor-owned utility Versant will be allowed to continue operating in Maine.

Avangrid’s profits last year came amid rate hikes for Mainers, with some people experiencing a monthly bill that increased by hundreds of dollars."

As the head of the organization that represents those plants, I feel compelled to set the record straight.

United Illuminating is owned by Avangrid, which in turn is owned by Iberdrola, the behemoth utility conglomerate headquartered in Spain. UI, Avangrid, and apparently Iberdrola, are playing a duplicitous game that should leave no one amused.

In recent years, Avangrid has been failing in everything from cost controls and budget management to project execution, storm response, and customer service. These shortcomings have resulted in millions of dollars in fines and apparently prompting them to lash out. This utility company looks desperate, and its claims would be laughable if they were not also dishonest and misleading."

Fines for reliability violations in Maine and New York.Avangrid (Maine & NY)CMP parent company fined $450,000 for admitted reliability violationsNews Article2019https://www.newscentermaine.com/article/money/consumer/cmp-parent-company-fined-450000-for-admitted-reliability-violations/97-fcf1c51b-28b4-4950-acde-136136cd3f85" Avangrid, the parent company of Central Maine Power (CMP), has been fined $450,000 for failing to meet certain reliability standards set forth by the North American Electric Reliability Corporation (NERC). NERC has now filed a Notice of Penalty because Avangrid has entered into a settlement agreement with the Northeast Power Coordinating Council. CMP, New York State Electric and Gas Corporation (NYSEG), and Rochester Gas and Electric Corporation (RG&E) have all been notified of the penalty. They are all subsidiaries of Avangrid Networks, Inc., a utility subsidiary of AVANGRID, Inc. that owns eight electricity, natural gas, or combination utilities in Connecticut, Maine, Massachusetts, and New York. According to the NERC's report, Avangrid collectively serves over 2.2 million electricity customers.
CMP's violations occurred January 11, 2019, when a data entry error interrupted connectivity and resulted in the failure of CMP's Emergency Management System (EMS) capabilities. Although a system operator did immediately notice the failure and communicated it to both a supervisor and EMS technicians, the reliability coordinator was not notified. Notifying the reliability coordinator is required by reliability standards, and by the time CMP notified its reliability coordinator, which is ISO New England, the monitoring and assessment capabilities had returned.
Utilities must conduct real-time assessments every 30 minutes, but in CMP's case, 1 hour and 17 minutes passed before monitoring and assessment capabilities returned."

When you talk about the £7bn that has gone out the Scottish economy in dividends to shareholders in Spain, that is the trickle down economics Liz Truss is talking about, but it did not trickle down to Scotland."

She added: “These figures exposing rampant profiteering, on their own, practically establish the need for the re-nationalisation of energy. A windfall tax might do something for a moment in time. But in the long term, it’s clear that piecemeal action will not solve the scale of these problems. Sooner or later Labour will have to back taking the energy giants back into public ownership. Better sooner, because privatisation has ended in tears for almost all of us.” It came after the Herald on Sunday revealed that while ScottishPower has been pushing for a taxpayer-backed £100bn fund to help energy firms freeze energy bills, and has eventually been adopted by Liz Truss, it has handed over nearly £7bn in dividends to its foreign owners since being taken over.

The payout bonanza to its Spanish owners, Iberdrola over its 14 years of control of the Glasgow-based company has been revealed as its high profile chief executive Keith Anderson has seen his pay soar by £200,000 to £1.35m in a year. Six years ago, Scottish Power Limited's highest paid director was getting almost half that at £687,000.

For a year now, News 8 has been bringing you the stories of customers with high bills and billing irregularities. Mohini Sharma is the organizing director for Metro Justice, an organization advocating for a public takeover of utilities. She said the demand is immensely popular. “Residents want to see our elected representatives from the county actually do something about the RG&E crisis,” said Sharma." Sharma said they want the legislature to fund a $1 million implementation study. Speakers did not hold back on RG&E during public comments. “RG&E’s infrastructure is unethical and broken. The evidence is in their incompetent management, billing errors, poor customer service,” said one customer. “I’ve seen my rates double in the past year. And I can’t even trust that that is due to increased usage,” said another customer.

They’re also asking the state to fund a study of what it would take to replace Rochester Gas & Electric with a public utility.

The demand follows months of public outcry from activists and residents regarding billing issues and erratic customer service. The advocacy group Metro Justice has/ called for the city to put up $500,000 towards the study, which would determine whether the city of Rochester could cut ties with RG&E and build a public utility. The group also called on the Monroe County Legislature to allocate $1 million for the study.

“Our community is being failed by RG&E,” Evans said, in the letter. “Please recognize that we are in a crisis. This frustration is not fleeting — RG&E has been divesting in our community for a long time. We need the PSC’s assistance and expertise to review their performance and to consider funding a study into moving away from RG&E in the near future.”

It’s about time we began building the political will to make power public
Opinion Piece2020https://truthout.org/articles/private-utility-monopolies-serve-shareholder-profits-lets-make-power-public/"Rochester Gas and Electric (RG&E) and its sister company New York State Electric and Gas (NYSEG) are investor-owned utilities: private corporations that generate or purchase electricity which is distributed to customers within a monopolized service area. While they are local brands, RG&E and NYSEG, which serve around 1.3 million customers in upstate New York, are privately owned subsidiaries of Avangrid, which is itself the North American subsidiary of the $68 billion multinational Iberdrola, based in Spain.

Who owns Iberdrola? Its top two shareholders are the sovereign wealth fund of the oil kingdom of Qatar — where fossil fuel revenues account for more than 70 percent of government revenue — and BlackRock — the largest of the world’s multinational shadow banks, through which the global 1 percent hide their money from regulators through speculative investments. BlackRock, which manages assets valued at more than a third of the U.S. gross domestic product, is a prime example of the secretive financial institutions that have taken control of an enormous share of our economy in order to further enrich the ultra-rich."

“That’s unacceptable, as no company should be allowed to simply walk away from contracts negotiated and awarded in good faith. The Commonwealth of Massachusetts should not set this kind of precedent,” Rodrigues wrote in the first of two letters he submitted. “More importantly, what kind of message would this send to other companies who play by the rules? Contracts for schools, libraries, courthouses, and highway construction projects all are facing the same fiscal pressures, and they all adhere to a strict set of ground rules, which includes performance of the contracts.”

The senator said he thinks that any company that non-performs on an existing contract should be disqualified and prohibited from bidding on any future projects for Massachusetts.

Ofgem said on Tuesday the companies had acknowledged that the 1.3 billion pound subsea cable was delivered late.

Ofgem said its investigation, which began in January 2020, found the delay was due to problems with land acquisition, manufacturing, installing the cables and commissioning tests.

Asenjo would have transferred this offer consisting of "carrying out intelligence work, with strategy, investigation, analysis and operational tasks in order to know, in advance, the relevant facts that could be relevant to the company."

According to the summary, Villarejo, while he was still active in the National Police and through his companies within the Cenyt Group, carried out a series of investigative or espionage work for Iberdrola between 2004 and 2017. Until now, he had identified 'Arrow' as the first order that the listed company made to the undercover agent to overcome the obstacles that were arising for the start-up of a combined cycle power plant in the Cadiz town of Arcos de la Frontera.

At the same time, Cenyt carried out the 'Black Board project' or 'B-B' (2004 and 2005) to obtain supposedly sensitive information on the activities of the former president of Endesa Manuel Pizarro. These were followed by the projects 'Gipsy' and 'Posy' (2009), related to the president of ACS, Florentino Pérez, and an Iberdrola executive. And, finally, the 'Wind project' (2011), which was the one that implicated Iberdrola Renovables, about the alleged espionage of the Swiss company Eólica Dobrogea and its majority shareholder Christopher Kaap and his attorney Corneliu Dica, with whom Iberdrola allied to promote a series of projects in Romania and with whom various conflicts arose."

News Article2021https://searchlightnm.org/nm-attorney-general-accused-of-violating-state-ethics-laws/"Attorney General Hector Balderas’ cozy relationship with a local law firm is under scrutiny amid allegations that Albuquerque-based attorney Marcus Rael Jr. used his influence with the attorney general to convince Balderas to sign off on a multi-billion-dollar utility merger. The merger between a global energy giant and New Mexico’s largest utility could drastically change electricity distribution in the state, with hundreds of millions of dollars for New Mexico utility customers hanging in the balance.

For eight months, the state has been involved in negotiations over a proposed merger between Connecticut-based Avangrid and Public Service Company of New Mexico (PNM), the state’s largest utility. Rael, who frequently represents the state, was hired to represent Avangrid’s parent company in the negotiations.

Five civic and environmental justice groups have filed a complaint with the State Ethics Commission, the State Auditor and the disciplinary board of the New Mexico Supreme Court, alleging that Rael used his influence to push the attorney general into signing on early to the merger deal. The move saved the companies money that would otherwise have gone into New Mexicans’ pockets via credits on their electricity bills and economic development funding. Balderas, who has participated in negotiations on behalf of consumers, initially critiqued the deal before changing course, after meetings with Rael."

Naturgy, Endesa, Iberdrola and TotalEnergies are obliged to offer the ‘Last Resort Rate’, known as the TUR.

The tariff is capped by the government and is considerably lower than prices on the free market.

Since the government approved a new TUR rate for communities that share a gas boiler and central heating systems, the requests to switch to the tariff have sky-rocketed.

It’s believed that customer service departments from the energy companies have not been able to cope with the demand."

Avangrid, the utility's subsidiary in North America, increases monetary contributions to candidates and political parties by more than 10 times during 2022. It has also doubled contributions to parties in the UK.
News Article2023https://www.elconfidencial.com/empresas/2023-03-06/iberdrola-dispara-pago-politicos-tras-veto_3586717/"Iberdrola has triggered the payment to politicians and political formations during 2022. Avangrid, its U.S. subsidiary, has increased contributions to political parties exponentially. From 45,011 euros that it disbursed in 2021, it has gone on to pay 559,550 euros ($589,000, at the change) to candidates and political parties, according to official documentation of the electric company. That is, in the last year it has raised these contributions by more than 10 times.

This increase in payments comes after the New Mexico regulator knocked down the acquisition of the electricity company PNM Resources at the end of 2021, which was a setback for the company, which saw one of the largest corporate operations in its history vetoed. The five commissioners of the regulator justified their vote against by the questions raised by the criminal investigation followed against Iberdrola and its directors in Spain by the Villarejo case and also by considering that the purchase by Iberdrola was not the best alternative to the interests of its consumers."
