Authorities: Westborough police officer shot, killed man who was stabbing wife

The officer has been placed on administrative leave while the investigation continues into the incident.

Authorities have identified the Westborough police officer involved in a fatal shooting of a domestic violence suspect last week.

The Worcester district attorney’s office said Monday Sgt. Jonathan Kalagher has been placed on administrative leave, per the department’s policy, while the investigation into the Friday shooting continues.

Westborough police responded to a 911 call around midday on Friday when a man, whose name has not been released by authorities, stabbed his wife inside their Windsor Ridge Drive apartment, the DA’s office said.

The woman was able to flee to a neighbor’s apartment where the residents called 911. Her husband pursued and continued to attack her, according to authorities, and when officers arrived at the scene, Kalagher issued “several commands to the man to drop the knife” before firing his gun “upon the suspect.”

The man was taken to a local hospital where he was pronounced dead, according to the DA’s office. The woman was also taken to the hospital and is stable condition.

“Sgt. Kalagher was also taken to the hospital according to department policy,” the DA’s office said. “He was not injured.”

State police assigned to the DA’s office are continuing to investigate the incident.
