I'm honored to have received the Student Excellence Award in Online/Digital Journalism from the Asian American Journalists Association (AAJA). This is for a story that holds a special place in my heart: "Ocean to table, Fish to Families: A sustainable solution to San Diego's food insecurity." A special thanks go to Dr. Lourdes Cueva Chacón, my capstone professor, for offering guidance and teaching me an entirely new toolbox of skills — from producing video packages to exploring different multimedia elements, I know how to enhance storytelling in so many more ways. I loved creating this project and learning more about San Diego’s communities. Also, representing my university chapter nationally fills me with pride. Eight print issues and over 60 news section articles later... it's time to show The Daily Aztec crew some love as our editorial board leadership tenure ends. It's been an unforgettable year and I couldn't have asked for a better team — this is truly an incredible group filled with passionate and talented people. To my news co-editor, Eugenie Budnik (not pictured, sadly), working side-by-side with you was a pleasure. We've gone through so many breaking news and late-night work messages together. Leading the news section was daunting at times, but working together made it feel manageable and rewarding. It’s bittersweet knowing my undergraduate journey is coming to an end. I was apprehensive about sharing my reflections, but with the encouragement of Daesha Gear, my fantastic editor-in-chief, and Noah Lyons, our wonderful opinions editor, I stepped out of my comfort zone. The secret is finally out! I am beyond excited, proud and other indescribable words that I will be a multiplatform editing intern for the Los Angeles Times through the Dow Jones News Fund program this summer! Selected from over 1,000 applicants, I will be one of 17 in the News Fund multiplatform editing cohort. Honored is an understatement. I can't wait to kickstart my post-graduation life and represent San Diego State University. I had a blast being a moderater for the Associated Students, San Diego State University 2024 Election Debates alongside The Daily Aztec team for two out of the four days! It was incredibly insightful to delve into the candidate’s platforms, create questions that resonate with fellow students and witness firsthand the importance of civic engagement. Gearing up for the A.S. 2024 election voting tomorrow at 8 a.m. to Thursday 7 p.m., please exercise your right to vote! Stay tuned for the election results, expected around Thursday 9 p.m. in the Student Union courtyard. Thrilled to share a journey with my phenomenal AAJA team, spotlighted in an interview by ABC 10News San Diego | KGTV Channel 10. We embarked on a mission to Lahaina, Maui as part of our new student initiative, AAJA STARTERS — standing for Students Traveling Across Regions to Empower, Represent and Serve. Our aim for the Lahaina Project is to shed light on the challenges faced by the Hawaiian community after the August wildfires and amplify their voices through our storytelling. Being featured by ABC10 was an incredible honor.
