Rep. Carolyn Maloney helped cut the ribbon on the new Covid vaccine and testing clinic at Astoria Houses on April 14. A long-time supporter of The Floating Hospital’s work, Rep. Maloney coordinated efforts between city, state, NYCHA and the New Jersey Institute of Technology to secure the rehabbed shipping container, which will provide free Covid testing and vaccinations administered by The Floating Hospital staff. WPIX-11 news shines a light on Camp Rise Up
Dr. Meghan Miller, The Floating Hospital’s director of health education, was interviewed on NYC TV station WPIX-11 about Camp Rise Up, the life-skills and leadership camp for teens that takes place each August. Dr. Miller, who created similar camps during her Peace Corps duty in Uganda, spoke about the life-changing experience for many kids who lack access to the same opportunity as their housed peers. Held on a rural campus upstate, the camp is a week of education, leadership skills, team building and outdoor activities. Watch the interview.

What’s round, hot and coming to The Floating Hospital? Pickleball! The emerging sport—a sort of hybrid of tennis and ping pong—will be featured in a tournament hosted by InPickleball magazine May 25-29 at the NYC Open stadium at Flushing Meadows, and The Floating Hospital staff has been invited to play. About 1,500 amateur and pro players will play on 42 courts over the five days of the tourney, competing for $125,000 in prize money. We anticipate up to 10 staff members and Camp Rise Up counselors will participate in a pre-game preview and free lessons as a warm up to summer camp activity. InPickleball will provide lessons, lunch and sporty attire for attendees and The Floating Hospital will man a branded table at the tournament with information about our community work.
