NC Child Director of Development

Position Overview: NC Child seeks a Director of Development to work closely with the Executive Director and Board of Directors to oversee and manage NC Child’s development program, with a focus on individual giving. The Director of Development must be able to think strategically and practically to implement a comprehensive and results-oriented development plan to strengthen and expand annual giving, major gifts, special events, and corporate/business support.  In addition, the Development Director will be responsible for developing the infrastructure needed for sustainability, effectiveness, and growth of the development program, and will take the lead in creating donor-focused communications and materials. This position reports to the Executive Director, staffs the Fund Development Committee of the Board of Directors, and works closely with leadership of the Board of Directors to strengthen and expand the organization’s development program.

Specific Job Duties and Responsibilities:

  1. Lead the development program
  • Develop the goals, strategies, and budget for the development program, including annual giving, major giving, special events, and corporate/business support
  • Work closely with the Executive Director, Fund Development Committee, and Board of Directors to develop and evaluate all fundraising plans
  • Track and report on progress of the all components of the program throughout the year
  1. Develop and oversee the infrastructure needed to support a robust individual giving program
  • Develop and manage effective systems for tracking and cultivating donors, and prospects through the organizational database with administrative support of NC Child’s Operations Assistant and Finance Officer
  • Oversee maintenance of donor files
  • Identify, research and qualify prospective donors
  • Develop portfolios of prospects for cultivation and solicitation by the Executive Director, Board, and other staff and provide on-going support, appropriate accountability, and strategic counsel to each to support their successful cultivation and solicitation
  • Provide direct support staffing to the Executive Director for major donor related responsibilities (ex. scheduling meetings with donors, writing donor communications, etc)
  1. Manage relationships with donors and prospects
  • Produce materials and tools to communicate regularly with donors, supporters and potential allies
  • Identify opportunities to network with donors and prospects and engage members of the staff and board as appropriate to make the most of those opportunities
  • Maintain consistent quality communications with donors in coordination with the Executive Director, other staff, and the Board
  • Ensure quality communications follow all gifts to provide thanks and documentation to donors
  • Identify and implement opportunities for donor recognition, stewardship, and appreciation
  1. Oversee planning and implementation of special events
  • Manage, with staff support, the biennial A Better World for Children: Tom V. Child Advocacy Luncheon
  • Manage the annual March Madness Online Tourney
  • Plan and lead other small engagements to cultivate new donors
  • Coordinate with the Public Engagement Director to ensure opportunities to cultivate new relationships through advocacy events, public outreach and Child Advocacy Network building efforts
  1. Develop relationships with business/corporate sector partners
  • Identify potential business and corporate partners whose values align with NC Child’s and who can support advocacy efforts through traditional (grant-making) and innovative (crowdfunding with B Corps companies).

Qualifications:

A competitive candidate will demonstrate these qualifications:

  • Experience working in non-profit development for a minimum of three to five years, and preferably at a leadership/management level
  • A strong commitment to NC Child’s mission and core values which include strengthening opportunity for all children, reducing race and ethnic disparities, and an orientation toward policy solutions that prioritize prevention and early investment.
  • High-level communication skills (verbal and written). We are looking for someone who can take lead in developing and implementing donor-focused communications strategies. The ideal candidate can quickly produce effective, donor-centric materials (e.g., annual report) and confidently present to an audience of potential supporters about the work of NC Child.
  • Outstanding engagement skills. The ideal candidate will actively and easily engage with supporters and potential supporters, developing relationships with individuals from across the political spectrum, and from the wide range of North Carolina communities that are racially, ethnically, socio-economically and geographically diverse.
  • Fearless approach to CRM systems, data, and technology. We are looking for a Director of Development who not only understands the importance of data and a good CRM system, but can lead the development of fundraising infrastructure (data entry protocols, CRM record management) and oversee its execution (data entry, quality control, reporting, and analysis).

Salary and Benefits:

  • This position is a full-time (40 hours/week) position at a salary range of $65,000-$75,000.

Position Requirements:

  • The Director of Development must be able to travel to Raleigh regularly and easily. While NC Child encourages staff to work from home whenever possible and has moved to an increasingly “virtual” office, the Director of Development will be needed in Raleigh on a regular basis.  Some in-state travel will also be required.
