LGLC Mourns Loss of Board Member Arthur Franz

Art FranzBolton Landing, NY – The Lake George Land Conservancy (LGLC) is saddened to learn of the passing of Arthur (Art) E. Franz, who served on the Board of Directors of the LGLC from 2009 – 2016, at which point he moved to the Advisory Board until his passing on July 9, 2021.

Art was passionate about protecting the lake and directed that energy into the LGLC. He served on the Conservation Committee, providing valuable insight and discussion, and on the Building Committee, which oversaw the construction of the LGLC’s current office space, the Macionis Family Center for Conservation.

In 2011 the LGLC presented its prestigious Henry M. Rowan Award to Art and his wife Tonie for their dedication to the LGLC and the lake, and their particular enthusiasm for the Center for Conservation.

The Macionis Family Center for Conservation began with the inspiration of Art and Tonie who contacted the LGLC staff about the potential of the Tavern on the Pond for a new office. They made a generous offer that made it possible for LGLC to secure the purchase of the building. While the building was under construction, Art spent hours witnessing and recording the process with his cameras and provided an invaluable pictorial record of the building’s and stream culvert’s renovations. The Conference Room of the Macionis Family Center for Conservation is now named in their honor.

Art and Tonie lived for many years in a home they built at the Anchorage in Bolton Landing. In addition to volunteering for the LGLC, Art also served on the board of the Bolton Historical Society, and assisted the Warren County Soil and Water Conservation District and other groups by producing videos.

Kind and soft-spoken, Art was a gentle but determined force for the protection of Lake George and his community. The LGLC will miss his friendliness and genuine concern for his extended LGLC family.
