Six years after the assassination of Berta Cáceres, the U.S. continues supporting hydroelectric projects similar to the one she was murdered for opposing. Additionally, those who ordered and paid for Berta's murder have yet to be brought to justice.
Bertha Zúniga Cáceres, daughter of Berta Caceres and General Coordinator of COPINH, will discuss the current status of efforts for justice for Berta as well as the new political context in Honduras following the inauguration of Xiomara Castro as President and social movement demands for U.S policy, including the continued relevance of the Berta Caceres Human Rights in Honduras Act in the U.S. Congress.
Victor Fernández, a leading Honduran human rights lawyer and co-founder of the Broad Movement for Dignity and Justice, will share with us about the struggle against the Jilamito Hydroelectric Project and how U.S. support for this project continues through IDB Invest despite the U.S. Development Finance Corporation's decision to cancel its planned funding following years of protest.
Brigitte Gynther of SOA Watch and Allison Lira of the Witness for Peace Solidarity Collective will speak about actions we can take to address U.S. support for destructive projects in the name of "develpment" and the militarization that is frequently used to repress those who defend their land and water.
Derek Sexton of Massachusetts Peace Action will moderate.
English-Spanish translation will be provided. The webinar is sponsored by SOA Watch, Massachusetts Peace Action, the Witness for Peace Solidarity Collective, and the Denver Justice and Peace Committee.
Please consider making a tax-deductible donation to support the SOA Watch Educational Fund. Thank you.
