Voters league starts push to register eligible felons

LOUISVILLE, Ky. (WTVQ) – The League of Women Voters of Kentucky launched a voter- registration campaign Wednesday to register people with prior felony convictions who were re-enfranchised by the governor’s December 2019 executive order.

“In July, August and September, the state and local Leagues will reach out to local community groups, including libraries, churches, ministerial associations, shelters, and local chambers of commerce. Groups will be provided with flyers and information cards to post and distribute that explain how a person with a history of a felony conviction can determine if they are now eligible to vote and how they can register,” said Fran Wagner, president of the LWVKY.

Small cards will also be distributed that include information on how to register to some 175,000 nonviolent felons who have completed their full sentence. The cards will direct people to CivilRightsRestoration.ky.gov  to check eligibility, list a number to call — 502-782-9731 — and e-mail to send inquiries — civilrights.restoration@ky.gov

“Now is the time to help the 175,000 people who are affected by this Executive Order know they are eligible to vote and to help them register to vote. We ask all Kentuckians to help us distribute this information broadly so we promote participation in our Kentucky democracy,” Wagner said.

Flyers with information on the process can be downloaded here. Requests for information cards can be made to kentuckylwv@gmail.com.

Since 2006, the League of Women Voters of Kentucky has issued reports on felony disenfranchisement in Kentucky. The most recent report was issued in February 2020.
