The Missouri Legislature must create equitable access to higher education for all Missouri students, including those who currently do not have a pathway to regularize their immigration status in the United States. Missouri is one of only six states where undocumented students cannot receive in-state tuition. Despite having grown up in the United States and graduating from K-12 Missouri schools, many students are being charged an unfairly inflated rate of tuition at public institutions of higher education.
Tuition equity has promising benefits for Missouri students and the future of our state. According to a bipartisan research group, expanding in-state tuition to undocumented students would increase our state’s spending power by $6.4 million and increase state and local tax revenue by $800,000. Tuition equity is one small change that our representatives can make to invest in Missouri students.
The Missouri Legislature should remove the language in the budget bill that mandates state colleges and universities to charge undocumented students the tuition rate for international students. All Missouri students should have access to in-state tuition rates at public institutions of higher education in their home state, regardless of immigration status.
