Job Title: Executive Director Organization: Wild Alabama

Overview: Wild Alabama, a 501(c)(3) nonprofit organization, is dedicated to the protection and promotion of Alabama’s wild places. The organization, with its roots dating back to the early 1990s, focuses on the National Forests in Alabama, especially Bankhead and Talladega National Forests. The Executive Director will lead the organization in fostering partnerships, educating the public, and ensuring the sustainable conservation of Alabama's natural treasures, and particularly its wild places.
Responsibilities: 1. Leadership and Management:
Supervise and guide the extremely dedicated and talented Wild Alabama staff.
Expand the staff by hiring a deputy director and/or development coordinator.
Collaborate with the Board of Directors to implement the organization’s strategic plan.
Help to organize and facilitate regular board and committee meetings.
Work with the organization’s Building Committee to plan a new headquarters facility. (Wild Alabama had 7 acres donated to the organization! And a 40 acre long-term lease that connects.)
2. Fundraising and Grant Management:
Build relationships with major donors and potential supporters.
Conduct outreach to civic organizations, church groups, and others.
Lead annual appeal letter campaigns and manage mailing lists.
Oversee grant writing and reporting for various foundations and federal agencies.
3. Program Oversight:
Risk management. Keep the safety of staff, volunteers and participants in the forefront at all times.
Supervise the Forest Watch program, liaising with the US Forest Service and other agencies.
Coordinate restoration monitoring tours and liaise with local communities.
Oversee various community-building and environmental education programs.
Oversee the stewardship activities such as trail maintenance.
4. Financial Management:
Design and monitor the annual budget in collaboration with the board treasurer.
Oversee the paying of bills and manage financial transactions, including grants with reimbursement criteria.
Create business plans for achieving goals and objectives with board of directors.
5. Public Relations and Communication:
Represent Wild Alabama professionally at all times. Guide the decisions on where to send staff for events and festivals statewide.
Oversee social media platforms, to be sure that Wild Alabama is regularly posting updates and engaging with followers.
Directly respond, or assign staff to respond, to inquiries via email, website, phone, and social media.
Create and distribute newsletters and articles to maintain regular communication with stakeholders.
6. Relationship Building:
Engage with partner organizations, including the US Forest Service, community foundations, as well as state and regional environmental groups.
Attend and represent Wild Alabama at various meetings, fostering collaboration.
Serve as the face of the organization and participate in external events to increase visibility, credibility, and market brand, and develop strategic partnerships to further increase community awareness and expand programs
Qualifications: Required:
Passion for environmental issues and the outdoors.
Knowledge of environmental conservation and outdoor education.
5+ years of experience in management, preferably with nonprofit organizations.
Experience working with a Board of Directors.
Strong communication skills, both verbal and written.
Ability to build and maintain relationships with donors and program partners.
Leadership skills necessary to inspire and direct staff and volunteers.
Familiarity with grant writing and reporting processes.
Experience partnering with federal agencies
Entrepreneurial mindset, with innovative approach to business planning
Preferred:
College degree.
Proficiency in Microsoft and Google products.
Experience with social media platforms and content creation.
