This training is a summation of a literature review around best practices for ending therapeutic relationships with consumers. It includes the presentation of a model for wrap-up activities that synthesizes the most important pieces of termination as described in several theoretical perspectives (reflective theory, family theory, CBT, solution focused and narrative theory). In this training, we will discuss appropriate ways to plan for endings with consumers including timing (both with regards to bringing up the topic of ending and how long to spend on the process), goals for wrap-up following the review-resolve-prepare model, potential emotional reactions to ending by both consumers and clinicians, individual characteristics that may impact the process and reactions to ending, celebration ideas for last sessions, and some ethical questions that might come up during and after the ending process.

Presenters Bio:
Sheri Meland, MSW, SAC-IT
Sheri Meland is a clinician in Outpatient Services. She holds an MS degree from UW Madison in sociology (focus on social psychology) from 2002 and an MSW from 2023. Additionally, she holds a SAC-IT and enjoys working with folks struggling with substance use. She has always been interested in the intersection between psychological processes and interpersonal interactions, focusing on the ways that perception influences behavioral choices, which in turn influence others’ perceptions, oftentimes creating a reinforcing loop that confirms perception and bias. When she is not thinking about psychological processes, she enjoys doing jigsaw puzzles, walking her dogs, and hanging out with her family.
