One year ago, news was emerging from Wuhan, China, that the government had confirmed their health authorities were treating cases of a new virus that had infected dozens of people in Asia. The first confirmed case in the U.S. was documented on January 21 and the first death was recorded in Washington state on February 29. By mid-March the pandemic was in full swing and Governor Murphy ordered the shutdown of much of the state's economy. Cases spiked rapidly in New Jersey as frontline and essential workers in healthcare, retail, protection services, transportation, and others were still reporting to work, risking exposure to deliver vital services amidst widespread shortages of PPE. After a decline in cases over the summer months, the virus has returned with a vengeance this fall and promises to remain relentless throughout the winter even as early doses of the new vaccines are administered. This week, we will be joined by workers and representatives from essential industries - retail, healthcare, transportation, and education - to discuss where have been, where we stand now, and what is still needed to save lives and protect workers. This will be our final episode of 2020 and we would also like to celebrate the work that all of our participants have been doing on the ground since this started. Please bring important news to share in the chat as we round out this Covid year.
