AAJA Philly | Trauma + Journalism Pt. 2

AAJA Philly is excited to offer this two (2) part workshop series on trauma and care in journalism:

1. Introduction to Trauma-Informed Interviewing
2. Boundaries, Microaggressions, and Accountability in the Newsroom

This series will be led by Ibis Team, who have worked with various Philadelphia newsrooms and news organizations, as well as CUNY Newark School of Journalism's Engagement Journalism program in providing, "trauma-informed education, consultation, and community support to organizations dedicated to journalism and media aiming to deepen their professional practice. Welcome AAJA! Working within a stressful environment with distressing topics may make both you and your interviewees more susceptible to the effects of trauma. In fact, research tells us that anywhere from 80 to 100% people who conduct interviews have been exposed to a work-related traumatic event (Dworznik, 2011; Feinstein et al, 2002; Newman et al., 2003; Pyevich et al., 2003; Smith et al., 2017; Teegen & Gotwinkel, 2001). While you are likely already taking steps to interrupt traumatic effects, the Ibis Team is here to offer you even more tips and techniques.

By the end of session #2, you will review examples of microaggressions and strategies to address them in the workplace; will be able to distinguish the difference between performative accountability and transformative accountability, and be able to identify three trustworthy trauma-informed resources for ongoing learning about boundaries.
