5 Priority Areas of the Advisory Council’s Recommendations
  • Awareness of/outreach to kin and grandparent caregivers.
  • Kin and grandparent caregiver engagement.
  • Services and supports for kinship families and grandfamilies.
  • Financial and workplace security for kin and grandparent caregivers.
  • Research, data, and evidence-supported practices.

Voices of Kinship Families and Grandfamilies

To ensure the recommendations reflected the priorities and needs of today’s kin and grandparent caregivers, the Advisory Council reviewed over 1,900 public comments in response to a Request for Information (RFI), listened to focus groups, and conducted an extensive review of the existing literature. In addition, multiple members of the Advisory Council are also raising grandchildren themselves.

Resources for Consumers and Professionals

The SGRG Act called for the Advisory Council to “identify, promote, coordinate, and disseminate” information, resources, and the best practices to assist members of kinship families and grandfamilies. The Advisory Council reviewed over 300 resources submitted by respondents to the RFI. The resulting document, Supporting Grandparents Raising Grandchildren: Resources for Consumers and Professionals, includes a list of resources and best practices for kinship families and grandfamilies and the professionals who support them.
