THE PERICLES PROJECT is a developmental workshop coming this July! Performance dates are as follows: July 8th, July 9th, July 11th, July 12th and July 14th. All shows are at 8PM. Each 90 minute performance will be followed by a 30 minute discussion and feedback session with the audience, giving the audience an opportunity to steer the direction of the work and grapple with the fundamental questions presented within it.
How do we keep our spark? Gino Yevdjevich, the composer for the forthcoming THE PERICLES PROJECT, lived through a three year siege during the war in Sarajevo. He said: “You could see in the other people who had kept their spark and who had lost it–had given up in some way." As artists and citizens we confront challenges on multiple fronts: from the pandemic to political dysfunction to social isolation. Can we summon the spark–the resilience, the reservoirs of empathy–to not merely survive, but thrive? Does art have the power to help us and those around us rekindle that spark? To investigate this question, Freehold is sharing a developmental workshop that inquires into what individual risk, communion with our deep, empathic imaginations, and connection to each other in community can bring about in our current times.
THE PERICLES PROJECT centers on a group of individuals who find themselves displaced, isolated, and mired in uncertainty. They seek the spark to move forward through engaging with each other in an old story–the story of Pericles, which itself is a story that mirrors their own. Pericles is about characters crashing and burning and recreating themselves; having expectations shattered; and endeavoring to meet what time has dealt them-–the inequities of fortune, moral uncertainties, and the potential in each person for good and evil.
We look forward to hearing from the audience.
