Spotlight on: Cory Hernandez, Financial Literacy & Home Ownership Counselor with Northern Kentucky Community Action Commission
It was her own experience as a first-time homebuyer that inspired Cory Hernandez to work in financial empowerment and help people access services and information to buy their own first homes. Now, she works as the Financial Literacy & Home Ownership Counselor with Northern Kentucky Community Action Commission, providing services in both English and Spanish. Cory says that “working with low-income or at-risk communities, they feel that buying a house is just a dream that is never possible.” She wants to make sure they know it might be.
With encouragement from her agency, Cory decided to begin studying for the HUD Housing Counseling Certification Exam, a test that certifies housing counselors to provide services through HUD programs; however, she found it difficult to hold herself accountable. While searching for a more interactive method of training for the test, she found Housing Action Illinois’ Housing Counseling Career Path training through HUD’s website. Because her agency serves a number of Spanish speaking individuals and families, Cory took the Spanish course to ensure she had tools to serve her Spanish-speaking clients as well as her English-speaking ones.
The Housing Counseling Career Path training in Spanish goes beyond the basics to provide a nuanced understanding of how housing counseling services may need to be tailored to the needs of Spanish-speaking clients. The curriculum includes topics related to cultural understanding and examples of potential real-life situations. Cory found it helpful that the training discussed how the homebuying process is often a group process, including multiple generations, for many Hispanic families. Additionally, the trainer discussed in the training how Spanish speakers often face discrimination, so many can be especially hesitant in the homebuying process. By attending the Career Path training in Spanish but taking the exam in English, Cory felt that she gained vital tools in both languages to serve her clients.
The Northern Kentucky Community Action Commission has not had a Spanish speaker to provide services in a number of years. As a HUD-Certified Housing Counselor providing services in both English and Spanish, Cory has opened “the door for first-time homebuyers to apply for some of the benefits that [the] state offers.” Hernandez wishes more people knew that housing counselors are there to provide a service, often with no cost to them. “We are here to help them and guide them so they don’t have to walk this process by themselves. The only thing that we ask for is their commitment.”
Cory credits much of her success in passing the exam to the tools and insight she gained from the Career Path training. Being in a community of people with the same goal helped keep her accountable and dedicated to her studies. It also made the content more digestible. Cory says, “When you attend the training, it’s like storytelling; someone is telling you how to accomplish first passing the test but also [how] to be a successful counselor.” The training didn’t just prepare Cory for the HUD exam–it prepared her for situations and procedures she experiences now in the work she does every day.

Northern Kentucky Community Action Commission no ha tenido en varios años un consejero en español para ofrecer servicios. Como consejera de vivienda certificada por HUD que ofrece servicios tanto en inglés como en español, Cory ha abierto “la puerta para que los compradores de vivienda por primera vez soliciten algunos de los beneficios que el estado ofrece.” Hernández desea que más personas sepan que las consejeras de vivienda están allí para ofrecer un servicio, a menudo sin costo alguno para ellos. “Estamos aquí para ayudarlos y guiarlos para que no tengan que recorrer este proceso solos. Lo único que les pedimos es su compromiso.”
Cory atribuye gran parte de su éxito al aprobar el examen a las herramientas y conocimientos que obtuvo del taller Career Path. Estar en una comunidad de personas con el mismo objetivo la ayudó a mantenerse concentrada y dedicada a sus estudios. También hizo que el contenido fuera más digerible. Cory dice: “Cuando asistes al taller, es como contar una historia; alguien te está diciendo cómo lograr primero pasar el examen, pero también cómo ser un consejero exitoso.” El taller no solo preparó a Cory para el examen HUD, sino que también la preparó para situaciones y procedimientos que experimenta ahora en el trabajo que realiza todos los días.
