Walk this way

It’s not too late to register a team of friends, family, colleagues or neighbors for our first “Walk for Families” fundraiser. The virtual stroll takes place the entire month of October and raises funds and awareness for families experiencing homelessness who need The Floating Hospital’s healthcare and social-support services. Your commitment is small compared to the impact your participation can have. The event fundraising minimums are $150 for adults and $75 for those under 18. When we walk in solidarity, we help ensure our city’s neediest families do not walk alone.

A weekend for women’s wellness

The Floating Hospital will host a women’s wellness weekend Oct. 16 and 17 from 9 am to 4:30 pm on Saturday and until 3:30 pm on Sunday. Held at our new clinic in partnership with MultiDiagnostic Services, the event will offer mammograms and screenings for cervical cancer by appointment. Participants will be treated to lunch, a massage (while available to first-come, first-served registrants) a gift bag of necessities. Pop-Up Covid vaccination

With a big assist from Rep. Carolyn Maloney, The Floating Hospital is planning to create a pop-up Covid vaccination and testing center at Astoria Houses. Serving residents of the complex and the community at large, the center will be comprised of repurposed shipping containers, tapping a popular trend to give the containers a new life. Similar facilities have been constructed and tested in New Jersey to address the overall health facility shortage, with customized interiors specifically oriented to patient care. The need for such facilities in Long Island City is linked to the disproportionate number of deaths from Covid at NYCHA residences. patch.com reports in the Astoria, Ravenswood, Woodside and Queensbridge Houses, at least 2,009 residents contracted the virus between March 2020 and June 2021 (the most recent data is available). Records show 90 of those people died from the virus.

Long Island City Partnership Annual Awards Gala

This month, The Floating Hospital was honored by the Long Island City Partnership for its service to and impact on the LIC community. Receiving the William D. Modell Community Service Award, the clinic was especially recognized for its “heightened role with COVID testing, vaccinations, clinics and more” and was additionally honored to receive a Citation of Honor from the borough of Queens president’s office.
