NHPF’s 6th Annual Symposium, One Paycheck Away from Homelessness: Building Popular Support for Affordable Housing
Thank you to our early corporate sponsors:
What it is
For the past four years, homelessness numbers have climbed in America according to HUD (Department of Housing & Urban Development). This is expected to continue in 2022. The Pandemic, natural disasters, political strife, and increased violence against those experiencing homelessness create an even more dangerous period for the unhoused. At NHPF, we know these are not abstract numbers. We interact daily with residents living one paycheck away from homelessness and know how important it is to fundraise directly for this cause. Is it a pipe dream to imagine a country where public and private sectors muster unprecedented popular support for service-enriched affordable housing that changes lives and prevents a precarious existence for the most vulnerable among us? Please join us to explore what it will take from government, not-for-profit, and for-profit developers, the corporate sector, and society at large to undertake the efforts necessary to house those in need.
How it Works
Prior to the event, we will survey two groups on best approaches to gain popular approval for affordable and supportive housing initiatives for those just one paycheck away from homelessness. Surveying leaders at NGOs (non-governmental organizations) as well as the general public, we will produce a prescriptive, forward-thinking Position Paper to share with our audience. We will monitor progress via longitudinal studies taken at yearly intervals. The event will take place at Union Station in Washington DC. Registration begins at 3:30 pm. NHPF will monitor CDC guidelines for any developments that would warrant a change in plans.

The Conversation
The event features compelling “success stories”: Conversations with those who have coalesced multiple groups and implemented innovative programs to move—and keep—unhoused people in housing they can afford. A key factor to each of these success stories will be what steps were taken to amass public support and forward-thinking recommendations for everyone in the affordable housing ecosphere to adopt.
