COMMUNICATIONS AND FUNDRAISING COORDINATOR

 

Job Description

The Inland Ocean Coalition (IOC), a project of The Ocean Foundation, a 501 (c)(3), seeks an experienced Communications and Fundraising Coordinator. The IOC’s mission is to create an inland movement that builds land-to-sea stewardship, and we are looking for a passionate and committed individual in the Boulder/Denver, CO who wants to help protect our ocean, climate, and waterways and prevent plastic pollution.

This role is ideal for a passionate professional who is eager to lead our organization’s digital presence and has demonstrated success in fundraising. Key responsibilities include managing our digital marketing strategies across social media platforms, email communications, designing website content, and overseeing our Customer Relationship Management (CRM) system. The coordinator will also be pivotal in fundraising, engaging with donors, seeking new revenue sources, applying for grants, and executing our donor stewardship strategy.

This is a part-time remote contract position open to candidates within and beyond the Boulder/Denver area. Despite being a contract position, the role is ongoing. 

 

Communications

  • Manage IOC's marketing and communications, including printed materials, website content, annual report, newsletters, social media, and blogs
  • Co-design and implement annual communications plan, ensuring alignment with organizational goals
  • Oversee website development, organization, and design 
  • Develop marketing plans for key programs and events in collaboration with staff
  • Oversee content editing for various IOC materials
  • Amplify partner messages and action alerts on social media
  • Participate in Advisory Board Meetings and relevant committee meetings when necessary

Fundraising

  • Help develop and execute an annual fundraising plan focusing on individual, in-kind, and corporate giving
  • Manage the IOC database for tracking donor activity, including organization income, event participation, and contributions
  • Help create a Corporate/Business Sponsorship Program and associated materials
  • Design and produce donor communication materials and ensure appropriate recognition of supporters
  • Regularly analyze fundraising effectiveness and report findings to Executive Director
  • Collaborate on special events and fundraisers, providing support with invitations, promotion, and online auction
  • Assist with grant submissions and oversee grant deliverables and reports

Required Skills and Qualifications

  • A bachelor’s degree with a minimum of three years of relevant experience
  • Strong interpersonal and donor stewardship skills
  • Exceptional communication capabilities, including campaign development and creating a cohesive communications and marketing platform
  • Proficiency in email marketing, digital advertising, and social media
  • Background in environmental, watershed, or ocean stewardship
  • Excellent writing and editing skills
  • Leadership skills, strategic and creative thinking, a team-oriented approach and strong attention to detail
  • Ability to work flexibly under pressure and prioritize tasks with minimal supervision
  • Fluency in WordPress and Salsa Labs (or similar software)

Desired Skills

  • Proven ability to secure funding from various sources
  • Experience in event planning
  • Website design and development
  • Experience working with global communities

SUNSCREEN CAMPAIGN OUTREACH COORDINATOR

 

Location: Roatán, Honduras

Position Type: Contract, part-time for a period not to exceed ten months. 10-15 hours a week. The contract term pays $4,500 over a ten-month period. 

Organization Overview:

The Inland Ocean Coalition (IOC) is dedicated to conserving marine environments through sustainable practices and community engagement. One of our collaborative projects, in Roatán, Honduras, focuses on implementing a petrochemical-free sunscreen ban to protect coral reefs and marine biodiversity. The person hired for this position will be working on the ground in Roatán with coalition members from Sun Divers Roatán, Roatán Marine Park, Bay Island Conservation Association, and will work closely with and report to staff from the Inland Ocean Coalition. 

Job Summary:

We seek an enthusiastic and dedicated Environmental Outreach Coordinator to join our team in Roatán, Honduras. The ideal candidate will be deeply committed to environmental conservation and strongly desire to engage with the local community to promote sustainable practices. This position involves working closely with local stakeholders, organizing community events such as beach clean-ups, and advocating for policy changes to support the petrochemical-free sunscreen ban.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Engage with local businesses, agencies, schools, and community groups to raise awareness about the importance of petrochemical-free sunscreens and their impact on marine life
  • Collect signatures and corporate letters of support for a petition to present to local government officials and policymakers, advocating for adopting a petrochemical-free sunscreen ban
  • Organize and lead other IOC events and educational workshops on ocean conservation. For example: 
    • Beach and Reef Clean Ups
    • Coral reef monitoring activities (requires scuba certification)
    • Create tabling opportunities
  • Develop and implement innovative local support efforts, such as reef-safe sunscreen exchange programs and public information campaigns
  • Serve as a liaison between IOC and local government officials, stakeholders, and the community, ensuring effective communication and progress toward our conservation goals
  • Monitor and report on the project's progress, including community engagement metrics, collected petition signatures, and outreach activities' impact on local practices and policies
  • Develop and execute innovative fundraising strategies to support the sunscreen campaign, including online campaigns, partnership with eco-conscious businesses, and community fundraising events
  • Identify and cultivate relationships with potential donors, sponsors, and partners to secure funding and in-kind support for campaign initiatives and activities
  • Organize and manage fundraising events and initiatives, coordinating with team members and volunteers to ensure successful execution and maximum engagement from the community
  • Collaborate with the communications team to create compelling fundraising materials and messages that resonate with diverse audiences and effectively communicate the importance of the campaign's objectives

Qualifications:

  • Fluent in English and Spanish (verbal and written communication)
  • Must reside in Roatán full-time
  • Familiarity with Environmental Science, Marine Biology, Conservation, Social Sciences, or a related field
  • Proven experience in community outreach, environmental advocacy, or related fields
  • Strong interpersonal and communication skills, with the ability to engage effectively with diverse groups
  • Creative thinker with a knack for developing innovative solutions to environmental challenges
  • Self-motivated with the ability to work independently and as part of a team
  • Familiarity with the Roatán area and its environmental issues is a plus
