The St. Louis-Jefferson Solid Waste Management District is pleased to announce that our 2024 waste reduction and recycling grant program is closed. The 2025 grant program will open in the Fall 2024. Thank you.
The St. Louis-Jefferson Solid Waste Management District provides technical and financial assistance with waste reduction and recycling services and activities throughout the City of St. Louis, St. Louis County, Jefferson County, and St. Charles County.
A wide variety of projects are included, such as:

- Community recycling events and drop-off locations
- Education and public information
- Composting
- Household Hazardous Waste (HHW) collection sites
- Reuse activities and resources
- Municipal recycling initiatives
- Curbside recycling collection
- Managing organic/food waste
- Recovering and repurposing demolition materials
- Market development
These activities and projects are made possible through our annual grant program, the grant round opens every fall.

Did you know that food waste globally results in more carbon dioxide emissions than commercial air travel? A regional Food Waste and Rescue Potential Report was recently developed by the Natural Resources Defense Council, earthday365, and the Missouri Botanical Gardens' Earthways Center. As a result of the report, the City of St. Louis committed to develop a strategy by December 2024 to prevent food from going to waste, rescue surplus food, and recycle food scraps. Join us to discuss the strategy and the opportunity to rescue surplus food for those in need.

Grant Programs
Applications for the grant round open every fall. Announcements are published on our homepage and in local publications.
The District's waste reduction and recycling grant program receives approximately 80 – 90 applications annually. The District generally awards 50 – 60 grants.
What We Do
The St. Louis region, just like many other areas throughout Missouri, is dedicated to increase recycling and reduce waste.
The St. Louis-Jefferson Solid Waste Management District (SWMD) is one of 20 districts throughout Missouri created to assist the public, private, individual, and not-for-profit sectors in making these goals possible.
This District includes all communities within the City of St. Louis, St. Louis County, Jefferson County and St. Charles County. Throughout the region, areas vary from highly urban to extremely rural; requiring a variety of programs and services to meet local needs.

To incentivize and promote the diversion of solid waste from landfills through waste reduction, reuse, and recycling alternatives.
