Clean Energy Bill Stalls, But Supporters Still Optimistic for Passage

A deal on Gov. J.B. Pritzker’s big push to make Illinois a green energy-powered state has reportedly been close for weeks.

Among the key elements expected to be included in the bill is a plan to phase out the use of fossil fuels for energy production. It also sets ambitious goals to have 40% of the state’s energy coming from renewable sources by 2030 and 100% from renewables by 2050.

Another key element of the bill is an equity component that aims to ensure that communities of color, as well as those communities hardest hit by a move away from fossil fuels, will benefit from opportunities and jobs a transition to a green energy future will bring.

But the bill stalled in the Illinois Senate earlier this week after Senate Democrats, including Senate President Don Harmon, balked at provisions that would phase-out coal-powered energy plants by 2035.

Jennifer Walling, executive director of the Illinois Environmental Council, Mark Denzler, president and CEO of the Illinois Manufacturers’ Association, Jack Darin, director of the Sierra Club’s Illinois chapter, and Delmar Gillus, chief operating officer at Elevate Energy, join Phil Ponce to discuss the prospects for a bill that would transform energy production in the state.
