Access to linguistically and culturally competent health care is a priority for the 4 million people with Medicare who are limited English proficient (LEP). This priority is heightened during the COVID-19 pandemic, reminding us that, whether in the hospital or over a telehealth platform, access to qualified interpreters and translated materials can be a matter of life or death. Although language access is a right enshrined in federal law, many LEP individuals continue to face barriers in health care. Fortunately, translations of Medicare & You 2022, the official U.S. government Medicare handbook, in Chinese, Korean, and Vietnamese are a new, in-language resource that people with Medicare, as well as enrollment counselors and advocates, can use to better understand their healthcare coverage and rights.
