TELL CONGRESS:
Rent is Due—We Need Emergency Rental Assistance Now
Urge legislators to act now to meet the critical needs of low-income renters and people experiencing homelessness while addressing the coronavirus pandemic.
Congressional leaders just unveiled their next coronavirus relief package, which does not include resources to address urgent housing needs.
The CARES Act provided some necessary funding for individuals and families facing housing instability, but much more is urgently needed. Rent is due on Friday. We need Congress to respond to the urgent needs of low-income renters by passing $100 billion in emergency rental assistance.
Prior to COVID-19, more than 579,000 very low income or extremely low income renter households in Illinois were cost-burdened. This means they were spending more than half their income on housing costs, which leaves very little for basic necessities. Based on data from the Great Recession, we expect this number will increase to at least 650,000 due to the economic impact of COVID-19. Emergency rental assistance will help keep these Illinoisans in their homes.
We also need Congress to pass funding for Emergency Solutions Grants, which will support Illinoisans experiencing homelessness, and to establish a uniform, nationwide moratorium on evictions and foreclosures to protect both renters and homeowners.
While experts advise everyone to stay at home in Illinois and around the country so as to protect our collective health and safety, we must make sure everyone has a home of their own.
