What is Adaptive Leadership?

Adaptive Leadership is a practical leadership framework that helps individuals and organizations adapt and thrive in challenging environments. It is being able, both individually and collectively, to take on the gradual but meaningful process of change. It is about diagnosing the essential from the expendable and bringing about a real challenge to the status quo.

When you realize that your organization’s aspirations cannot be attained through current approaches,  Adaptive Leadership allows you to diagnose, interrupt, and innovate – in short, build capacity to solve complex problems. Drawing from biological and evolutionary theories, fundamental principles include: preserving essential DNA for the ongoing survival of the species, the elimination or rearrangement of DNA no longer needed, and the creation of new DNA configurations – enabling the species’ ability to thrive in novel and demanding environments. Whereas biological evolution expands across many centuries, Adaptive Leadership is purposeful evolution in real-time, with founding principles including: change is imperative for survival and prosperity, learning stems from both past achievements and setbacks, growth is fostered through experimentation, diversity is valued, adaptations necessitate the reconfiguration or displacement of outdated strategies, concepts, tools, and approaches.

Adaptive Leadership emerged from more than thirty years of research at Harvard University by Dr. Ron Heifetz and Marty Linsky, defining the frontier of leadership training and development. From this research, Cambridge Leadership Associates was born, establishing the firm as the original and premier Adaptive Leadership consulting firm in the market.
