Senator Stewart and Senator Rodriguez Introduce Asian American History Bill

Tallahassee, FL – Senator Linda Stewart (D – Orlando) and Senator Ana Maria Rodriguez (R – Miami Dade) have co-sponsored and sponsored, respectively, Senate Bill 294 in the Florida Senate in a bipartisan effort to implement Asian American and Pacific Islander education in public schools.

Senate Bill 294 requires the instruction of the history of Asian Americans and Pacific Islanders be taught in public schools. This bill is a bipartisan effort to educate students in AAPI history, and the community’s vital contributions to American society. The bill is introduced by Senator Rodriguez with Senator Stewart supporting the bill as the primary co-sponsor.

“Incorporating Asian studies in the classroom allows students to uncover fresh global perspectives.” Senator Rodriguez said “Through its culturally diverse and rich history, students will gain a deeper appreciation and understanding of the Asian community.”

“I advocated for this legislation last year and I’m happy to collaborate with Senator Rodriguez to get this passed this session.” Said Stewart “It is necessary now more than ever to educate young people on different cultures given the Asian-American hate crimes that have been happening across the country, most recently with the mass shootings in California.”
