Dear NPH Supporter,

The 2019 Legislative Session is officially over and we’re excited to share that most NPH Priority Bills have been signed into law! The momentum and enthusiasm on critical housing issues is abundantly clear and this is just the beginning. If you haven't seen it already, be sure to read the inspiring statement from Executive Director Amie Fishman on how, collectively, this legislative session has welcomed a new, comprehensive strategy for housing justice that will create real, meaningful solutions for our neighbors and communities who need relief now. 

Key affordable housing wins from this session include: AB 1486 (Ting), which will transform surplus public lands into affordable housing; AB 1487 (Chiu), which will allow the Bay Area to pursue regional housing solutions; AB 1482 (Chiu), which will protect tenants from rent-gouging and unfair evictions; SB 329 (Mitchell), which will help end section 8 housing discrimination; SB 330 (Skinner), which will help create more affordable homes by ensuring that local governments maintain consistent rules and regulations; AB 1763 (Chiu), which will reduce obstacles to building affordable housing developments near transit; and several others, which you can read more about at the NPH Action Center.

NPH was also proud to play a leadership role in the “3Ps” legislative campaign and coalition, which saw 10 of their campaign bills signed into law! This work was led by NPH Director of Advocacy and Community Engagement JR Starrett, and included several of NPH’s Priority Bills as well as bills that expand opportunities for Accessory Dwelling Units (ADUs); protect renters; and streamline housing developments that offer affordable units. Read more about the “3Ps” package of bills at: www.3pshousingplan.org

And as we plan now for the second year of our legislative session in 2020, I wanted to write directly to each of you about the new approaches and strategies you can expect at NPH to guide our work together ahead. As a team, NPH has been looking at ways we can strengthen and deepen our most valuable asset in our affordable housing work: our relationship with you, our members, partners, allies, and supporters! I’m excited to share that we’ll be kicking off a new approach to our legislative and regulatory convenings. As I step into my new role as Policy Director, NPH remains committed to fostering an environment where our members can come together and discuss openly our goals and strategies for our affordable housing movement. As we move forward, we're looking for new structures that can promote even more dialogue and exchange as NPH develops its legislative priorities. We'll be offering clear frameworks for policy decisions and new opportunities to connect with policy advocates and experts.
