I am calling today because trans kids are being bullied by lawmakers. That’s the easiest way to put it. Instead of working on policies to improve the lives of their constituents, elected officials in states around the country, including right here in our home state, continue to waste time and tax dollars by dehumanizing our kids.

They have brought forward bills to ban people who are trans from using the bathroom, from updating their legal I.D., from playing sports, and from accessing medical care.

These bills are discriminatory. They are degrading. They are immoral. They are unkind. And you must oppose them.

As a PFLAG member, I know firsthand how the political environment today is hurting trans kids like the ones in my life. I know how scared they are and how singled out they feel. Kids should get to be kids. They shouldn’t have to worry about what politicians will do to make their lives harder. So please, protect trans kids. Oppose efforts to limit their rights and their freedoms. Listen to parents who have trans kids talk about how supporting their children in being their true selves has helped those kids be happier and healthier.

As a PFLAG member and a proud Georgian that cares about this state, I am deeply concerned about SB 30 and SB 39, which would cut off best practice medical care for transgender Georgians. The government shouldn’t be able to overrule a person’s decision to seek health care for themselves and their families– whether they are transgender or not. And I urge you to oppose these bills.

We can agree that everyone deserves to be healthy and thrive, but this bill was designed to specifically harm transgender kids, like the ones in my life. Were SB 30 to become law, Georgia would be saying that the state, that the government, knows better what is medically best for a child better than the two people who love the child the most — the parents.

SB 39, meanwhile would put politicians between patients and providers, and could ban access to essential healthcare for transgender Georgians. Not only does SB39 ban medically necessary care for transgender people, but it also allows the state to overrule patients who are trying to access necessary medical care– care that is supported by the American Academy of Pediatrics, the American Medical Association, American Psychological Association, and every other leading U.S. medical professional association.
I urge you, as your constituent, to oppose these dangerous attacks on patient rights. Vote NO on SB 30 and SB 39 and urge your colleagues to do the same.

As a PFLAG member and your constituent, I urge you to vote NO on H.R. 22, the SAVE Act.

The SAVE Act is legislation in search of a problem. If passed, this bill would restrict voting access to hundreds of thousands of Americans without making our elections any more secure.

This bill would require all Americans to provide proof of citizenship, in person, when registering to vote or updating their voter registration information. This requirement puts an unnecessary burden on every American seeking to exercise their right to vote, especially trans people, only half of whom have updated documents.

Trans people face time-consuming, confusing, and expensive legal barriers when updating passports and birth certificates, which is why only about half of trans people have documentation that reflects their chosen name. The requirements of H.R.22, combined with the existing challenges trans people face updating their documents, would significantly reduce trans Americans’ access to the ballot.

In addition to impacting trans people, H.R.22 would restrict ballot access for the more than 140 million Americans who do not have a passport, the 21 million Americans who do not have access to their birth certificate or other documentation, or the millions of Americans who have changed their legal name, including women who take their spouses’ last names.

The people this legislation will hurt are U.S. citizens. The trans people in my life have a right to make their voices heard in the ballot box. H.R.22 will make it much harder for them to vote, if they will be able to vote at all. The same is true of tens of millions of other American citizens. None of this will make American elections more secure, it will just make the electorate smaller. I urge you to vote “NO” on H.R.22.
