Journalism Fellowships and Practicum
As a journalism graduate student at SOC, you can learn from the best in a newsroom through a practicum course or through fellowships at top media outlets or changemaking nonprofit news organizations, including these current opportunities:
The Charles Lewis American University Fellowship at the Center for Public Integrity offers a student direct experience on projects that expose discriminatory systems in employment, housing, health care, education and access to democracy. Learn to hold powerful interests accountable and investigate inequality in America while enhancing your data-driven and narrative journalism skills.

The AU SOC ESPN fellow joins investigative efforts as part of the Enterprise Unit. Fellows have access to mentors from a team of about 50 journalists and managers, including sourcing, reporting, data journalism, freedom of information requests and more. Applicants should have 2-5 years of investigative experience. Prior work in or an embrace of reporting on systemic and social inequities is highly favored.

Fellowship
The Washington Post's award-winning Metro staff welcomes fellowship applications to write feature and trend stories, investigates major local institutions and covers breaking news in data-driven and highly visual ways. Fellows work side by side with established reporters, building a professional network and earning bylines on a national platform.
Practicum
Once in the program, Journalism and Public Affairs MA students may apply for The Washington Post Practicum to spend one course -- for one or two semesters -- working with the investigative team of one of the nation's leading newspapers. Post reporters and Pulitzer Prize-winning SOC faculty member John Sullivan are your mentors as you learn to research, write and fact check major investigative stories.

The Investigative Reporting Workshop Graduate Fellow researches and reports for one or more major investigations during the academic year. Recent reporting and co-publishing partners include The Washington Post, The Fresno Bee, The Tampa Bay Times, Public Health Watch, WAMU in Washington and WWNO in New Orleans.
