Become a Placement

Lutheran Volunteer Corps (LVC) places enthusiastic, talented emerging leaders at a wide variety of non-profit organizations across the country for a year or semester of service.

LVC currently accepts applications from organizations located in Baltimore, MD; Minneapolis and St. Paul, MN; and Washington, DC. Placements located anywhere around the country may offer virtual-only positions for flexible full-year or half-year terms.

LVC partners with Placements in fields such as housing and homelessness, health care, community development, environmental concerns, children and youth, LGBTQ issues, immigration, women’s rights, and more — and we’re open to a wide variety of social-impact employers. Review our placement position directory for further information about positions filled the past few years. Current and new placement supervisors should review the Participant’s Handbook to get a good general summary of the program.

Placement Application Process: Placements interview applicants March through July, and can offer year-long positions in-person or virtually.

To apply for LVC, you must submit an online application and may participate in a site visit by LVC staff if your organization is new.  Contact LVC with questions about becoming an LVC placement and review a more detailed Placement Application & Matching timeline.

Acceptance into the LVC program does not guarantee a match with an LVC fellow. While LVC tries to match all Placements, we can not guarantee applicant acceptance to our program, or the Placement.

To Apply:

[NOTE: Once you complete a Placement Application as a new Placement, you don’t need to complete another one.  Simply submit a new position description each year you participate thereafter, and let us know if your CEO, contacts, or budget have changed.]

APPLICATION TIPS:  Create your application offline first so you’ll have a copy, then cut and paste into the form. Once you submit, you can not make changes or log back in.  Be ready to complete the application in one sitting; do not start one, abandon, then try to start a new one.  Clear your computer’s cookies/history if you started an application more than once.  Contact LVC before starting the application if you have questions at operations@lutheranvolunteercorps.org. 202-387-3222.

  • View the Sneak Peek: Placement Position to write about the position before you go online to complete the application.  You will not be able to save the application after completing. Complete and save a copy offline before cutting and pasting into the online form!

POST THE FLYER BELOW AT YOUR WORKPLACE TO ENCOURAGE THE CONSTITUENTS YOU SERVE TO APPLY, and share with your friends, family, and community!  Participants must be over 21, and can be young adults, gap year, on sabbatical, in-between jobs, retired, or other status to apply.

Eligibility

Our mission is focused on advancing the impact of social justice organizations.  Our nonprofit partners are committed to mentoring, welcoming fellows from a variety of backgrounds and skill levels, and are financially stable.  Placements agree to uphold LVC values and agree to do so when signing a contract.

Placement organizations are mostly 501(3)c non-profits, have an office or other workplace easily accessed by public transit, and are within commuting distance from the LVC community house.

Please visit our Placement Eligibility page for more information.

Cost

Placement organizations pay a service fee that covers the cost of the LVC program to search, secure, match, manage, and close the fellow for one year, or one semester.  The fee covers expenses including but not limited to orientation week, stipend for personal expenses, housing and utilities, food, training and retreats, staff supervision, house mentors, and travel to the assigned city. Placement organizations are generally required to contribute to health insurance and local transportation.

Placements are charged a one-time placement fee, after the match has been accepted.  The placement fee is calculated on a sliding scale based on the organization’s budget reflected in the most current 990 for salaries and benefits, and generally ranges from $12,000-$26,000 depending on budget and city. For a detailed cost estimate, you may request a financial worksheet.
