When most people think of Alliance for Global Justice, they think of solidarity with Latin America. But through our fiscal sponsorship program we also partner with many groups working for justice in the United States.
When video of George Floyd’s cold-blooded murder by Minneapolis police was made public, people rose up in the largest urban uprising since Martin Luther King’s assassination in 1968. In city after city people said, “No more murders of unarmed black men and women.” “Black Lives Matter.” “Defund the Police.”
Not only did people put their bodies on the line, they put their money there too! AfGJ, the fiscal sponsor for Movement for Black Lives and several big city bail funds, went overnight from processing donations equaling hundreds or thousands of dollars a day to processing millions of dollars! In the month of June, we processed more money for our fiscally sponsored groups than in the previous 36 months combined.
We worked our butts off. As fast as the money came in, it was needed somewhere to get someone out of jail or to organize communities to stand united against police repression. Perhaps you made a contribution that passed through us to where it was most needed on the front lines of struggle. We helped Black Lives Matter activists in Louisville, KY where Breona Taylor was murdered by police and Oklahoma City, OK – both frontline cities in the struggle – set up bail funds and start collecting money.
We had to hire five new staff members to keep up with the work – and we did it in the belief that this time the people will not stand down until the killing stops.
AfGJ, since its formation in 1998 out of the Nicaragua Network and other grassroots groups, has been known for having the latest technological infrastructure and for sharing it with the Movement. In recent years many have called us “the accounting department of the Movement.”
We haven’t done it with foundation grants to AfGJ – many of the projects we sponsor receive grants, but we don’t. We haven’t done it by cultivating a few rich people. We haven’t done it with corporate donations.
We’ve done it because thousands of people like you have supported our work and our vision for a better world without capitalism and imperialism by contributing an average of $50 at a time.
AfGJ is not beholden any interests except to people who want to transform this country and this world into a better place for our children and the ecosystems that sustain us. Will you make a tax-deductible donation today for Global Justice?
Or make a check out to Alliance for Global Justice and mail it to 225 E 26th St., Ste. 1, Tucson, AZ 85713
We make a point not to bother you too many times a year with financial requests. We are much more interested in sending you updates on human rights struggles around the world, and asking you to join us in supporting those communities.
This time of year, however, we need to ask you to support the Alliance for Global Justice, with a tax deductible donation.
