Developing cutting-edge technology designed to help non-profit agencies manage and document their services more effectively, Felton has efficiently leveraged data collected from years of research to aid other agencies with operations automation and training for client-centric outcomes.

Because of this legacy, and its through-line, in 2019 San Francisco Mayor, London Breed, proclaimed October 30th, Felton Institute Day. “Felton has stood the test of time because of its commitment… to all those who need that extra wrap-around support services,” she said. “Felton is an important partner in making us deliver what is necessary to make San Francisco a better, more equitable place for our residents.”

Felton Institute has provided coordinated resources for San Francisco since its inception in 1889 as Associated Charities and subsequently Family Agency of San Francisco. Felton’s renaming honors the organization’s renowned director, Katherine Felton, recipient of honorary degrees of LL.D. conferred by both the University of California and Mills College for her inspirational, ground-breaking approach of adapting social programs to meet personal need, advantaging both the program and the person.

Innovating practice has persisted through the early days of the organization as it developed the first foster home system in California and lobbied to create what would become the State Department of Social Welfare. That inspiration remains, as current President and CEO, Al Gilbert, re-imagines the delivery of justice services or identifies innovative ways for the community of nonprofits to partner together in ways that elevate client services such as Felton’s CIRCE system. He now leads Felton as a networked support system offering more than 50 programs across six divisions extending to four Bay Area counties beyond San Francisco.
