Texas, Florida Report Fewer New COVID Cases Than Michigan, Pennsylvania, New York

I’m not getting my hopes up that the Democrat governors will give in and stop restricting freedoms.

I don’t know, President Joe Biden. Maybe we should go with the “neanderthal thinking” when it comes to COVID restrictions.

The left lost their minds when Texas Gov. Greg Abbott eliminated the state mask mandate. They still hate Florida Gov. Ron DeSantis. Yet, those states have been recording fewer cases than Democrat-led Michigan, Pennsylvania, and New York.

Michigan has seen an uptick in COVID cases. Officials begged for vaccines, but CDC Director Rochelle Walensky told them to shut down the state again.

It’s not like Gov. Gretchen Whitmer has loosened her grip on the citizens. Pennsylvania and New York officials continue their assault on freedoms as well. It’s not working:

According to data from the Centers for Disease Control (CDC), Michigan has faced worst-in-the-nation COVID-19 positivity rates in recent weeks. The state reported 390.2 cases of the virus per 100,000 in the last seven days. Gov. Gretchen Whitmer has laid blame on spring break travelers going to Florida, urged residents returning from the Sunshine State to work from home for a week or have their children learn remotely for a week.

Pennsylvania saw a troubling surge in coronavirus cases and related hospitalizations this month, with health officials reporting 221.4 cases per 100,000 in the last seven days.

New York City has reported 206.1 cases per 100,000 in the last seven days. The rest of the Empire State accounted for 176.4 cases per 100,000 in the last week, CDC data shows. Despite this, New Yorkers are growing frustrated with Gov. Andrew Cuomo’s ongoing mask mandate. The embroiled Democrat is currently under investigation for his handling of the pandemic in senior care facilities.

The data showed Texas reported only 69.9 new cases per 100,000 in the last seven days.

Florida reported 191.9 news cases during that same time frame.

Don’t worry, the marxist media will find a way to spin it so that FL and Texas are villains. And that Whitmer, Cuomo and Harris are heros.

As much as I disliked her, Ann Richards had more cajones than Abbott. Just another weak politician.

Ignorance: Definition thereof:
“Gov. Gretchen Whitmer has laid blame on spring break travelers going to Florida, urged residents returning from the Sunshine State to work from home for a week or have their children learn remotely for a week.”

How *dare* you go to Disney World, which has a nearly zero percent infection rate with careful masking and checking. Once you come back to the Motherland, you will report immediately to your basement, Comrade, or things will go badly for you.

    mark311 in reply to georgfelis. | April 26, 2021 at 4:09 pm

Your pro mask and social distancing then, given Disney world’s enforcement of those policies has been pretty strict.

If this were a FL problem, FL cases would be on the rise and they aren’t. Whitmer is lying through her teeth….AGAIN!

        mark311 in reply to healthguyfsu. | April 26, 2021 at 6:18 pm

Well they are declining more slowly than the state’s being criticised in the article. has had a lot of cases already so it can’t be described as doing well.

Evil Otto in reply to mark311. | April 27, 2021 at 6:50 am

“Declining more slowly?” Is that the standard now? Florida has been consistent for months now. Deaths per 1M isn’t even in the top ten, despite being “God’s Waiting Room” with an elderly population. And this is despite being open for business for months.

Why, it’s almost as if these lockdowns and other heavy-handed rules being put into place DON’T ACTUALLY WORK.

          mark311 in reply to mark311. | April 27, 2021 at 3:53 pm

          @Evil Otto

Taking an outlier in terms of the norm of cases is really fucking stupid, The vast majority of places where lax measures have been implemented have done very badly. Id also point out that Florida hasnt done that well, its still done badly compared to other countries for example.

Oh look, marxist311 is back to tell us all to wear masks that don’t do one damn thing to stop a virus.

It was okay for her, her staffers and their families to go to
Florida and Alabama. All those other little people should stay home though. Rules for thee, not for me is her motto.

And wHitler went to florida to visit her ailing dad. Unlike what she did to Michigan families who weren’t allowed to visit their ailing parents who often died alone.
Then two of wHitler’s top wymmin went south for spring vacation. But that’s different.
And the coup de gras was wHitler MANDATING MASKING 2 YEAR OLDS and up.

Seasonal effect. Lifestyle and demographic (e.g. 80% of cases are overweight) differences. Community immunity through inoculation, not necessarily vaccination, and therapeutic treatment. Dispensing with masks that, accounting for chance and other factors are comparable to flipping a coin at best, and increasing infections at worst.

The death plagues is scarcely more deadly than the flu, and for this they demanded we become the People’s Republic of Amelica.

    mark311 in reply to McGehee. | April 26, 2021 at 3:20 pm

Can you justify that statement? The death rate from Covid is much higher than flue, for the older generation studies have placed the difference at around 4 to 5 times the number of deaths. The number of US deaths currently stands at 572K deaths, what’s the flue death count

The Friendly Grizzly in reply to mark311. | April 26, 2021 at 3:44 pm

Does that include those who tested positive when they crashed their motorcycle? Those who tested postive when they fell off a ladder?

Deaths caused by trauma to homicide or car accident aren’t included in the figures as a norm. There are the odd case as per the motorcycle case in Florida that make the stats but are then error checked out which is why the raw figures might change very slightly as time progresses. However citing the odd case ie 1 or 2 incidents doesn’t change the overall picture when compared with 572k deaths. In other words the figures are pretty accurate, this can be seen when you compare the total death rates for the five years prior to Covid with last year and you will see the figures match up very well.

Wasn’t George Floyd a “Covid Death”?

      randian in reply to mark311. | April 26, 2021 at 11:38 pm

35+ rounds of PCR amplification as the test standard mean 75-90% of all reported covid-19 cases are false positives. The case counts are even more suspicious when you realize that multiple positive tests of the same person are treated as distinct “cases”. They are also over-counting covid by calling flu cases covid. Either the covid test can’t distinguish between covid and the flu, or they’re just lying and calling anything with flu-like symptoms covid.

      Barry in reply to mark311. | April 27, 2021 at 12:45 am

marist311 is full of shit. Everything he writes is a lie.

It’s his job, he’s paid to do it.

I would really like to know the true statistics of number one of true covid deaths. And yes I believe dying of pneumonia secondary to initial I doof covid counts, or pulmonary/ cerebral blood clots.
Remember, this virus affects the blood system.

Michigan is still pretty locked down and leads the nation in new cases. Florida and Texas are wide open and they have what amounts to a statistically irrelevent number of new cases. Closed=Bad. Open=Good. It couldn’t be more clear. For Comrade Governor Whitmer to blame Michigan’s numbers on spring breakers coming back with Covid from a place where there are virtually no new cases is not supported by science or math.

Last point, we always look at Michigan and Florida but I wonder why Ohio which shares a border with Michigan is not seeing any upticks either. Maybe Covid doesn’t like Buckeyes either.

Fauci may be good for something. As an indicator of what not to do.

Do the opposite of what the ass covering power loving attention whore bureaucrat says and things will be better.

That may become a general rule for how to respond to what government bureaucrats say in the nation formerly known as the Land of the Free.

Biden told Whitmer to shut down and refused to send any new doses of the vaccine. Think about that for a minute. Does anybody remember the media outrage? Me neither. Now, imagine if Trump told Whitmer no. What would be the media reaction to that?

    healthguyfsu in reply to DanJ1. | April 26, 2021 at 5:09 pm

It was the right call. You shouldn’t get vaccinated if you get recently infected as it can worsen your immune response to the disease and cause hopsitalization.

    JusticeDelivered in reply to DanJ1. | April 26, 2021 at 10:35 pm

I finally got the J&J vaccine today, but had to go to a grungy doctor’s office in the ghetto to get it.

For a disease that can be translated via the medium of eye sight it sure does have some interesting behaviour patterns.

So we are told the Chinese Death Kooties is extremely dangerous and spreads like wildfire yet Florida and Texas are bucking the trend EVEN with no social distancing and economies fully open.

We are also lead to believe NZ has no cases although the occasional MIQ guard gets infected and spends time in the public before their infection is detected and they are quarantined and no magical wildfire spread.

Last February I had the Chinese Death Kooties before it was fashionable yet my family and my friends didn’t contract it from me in spite of me swapping bodily fluids and being around lots of people before, during and after my illness 😜😜

It really doesn’t add up.

The figure actually show a rapid decline in cases in the cited Democrat cases (between 11 and 26%) Vs only a 6 % decline for Texas and Florida so it’s a bit of a stretch to equate the Texas/Florida policies as working well. Its also not easy to do a realistic comparison between states given the differences in weather, population density and health care generally.

The virus is harmless to basically everyone. We have known for a long time who is at risk. Protect them, leave everyone else alone. You spamming every covid post won’t help the vulnerable.

          @colonel Travis

The virus is harmless to everyone!? Seriously Can you justify that? The idea of protecting just the elderly is pretty problematic , there is still a significant issue with Covid deaths at middle age and upwards, isolated just the elderly would be a serious challenge and impractical how exactly would you isolate those in multi generational households which comprise some thing like 20% of all households?

As for giving shit, really not in the case of gonzotx

I don’t remember you stumping that argument when NY was low after going through its unprecedented first wave? Where were you when Cali was in the thick of it? Including Southern Cal? Weather was fine, and it still was going up!

No one gives a shit what you think, either. You are a gnat on this board that thinks their opinions are well-reasoned when most of your “opinions” just get recycled from a couple pseudo-fact check sites like Wapo and politifact.

      mark311 in reply to healthguyfsu. | April 26, 2021 at 5:45 pm

It’s not a game it’s called having a realistic assessment of what the numbers actually mean. The central claim of the article is that lockdowns don’t work and the facts don’t really support that claim at all. The article cherry picks data points when the bigger picture is quite different.

Haha nice try, the ad hominem doesn’t really change the reality that you haven’t actually provided an argument. All you’ve shown is that you don’t pay attention to the links I’ve provided since they are very rarely from the sources you cite.

Lucifer Morningstar in reply to mark311. | April 26, 2021 at 9:15 pm

Provide links to the sources of your numbers or you can be safely and easily ignored as the troll you so obviously are. Thanks.

Bottom line is that the over reaction to the Rona is nearly at an end. Multiple vaccines have been available for months. As of 25 April, CDC website, about 140 million people in US received one dose and about 87 million a full course.

Neither includes the immunity offered via contracting Rona. USMC studied kids.at boot camp; those with antibodies remained 90% immune. 10% were either re infected or had a ‘lingering, long-term case’.

Even in the very close boot camp setting only 40% of those without antibodies contracted Rona. Pretty encouraging.

The 1957/1958 flu pandemic killed about 100K with a population of about 175 million in US. Today we have a bit over 500K dead out of perhaps 350 million in US. So adjusting for population the Rona is about 2.5 times as bad.

Although that doesn’t adjust for the age of the population. 21 st century medicine has prolonged life expectancy. The first heart bypass machine was used in 1955.

IMO, we allowed fear to override common sense. Institutions that have clearly overstated the dangers and political figures who used that to exercise control will have their day of reckoning. No reasonable person will ever trust the ‘expert/elite’ without clear and convincing evidence for many years.

    mark311 in reply to CommoChief. | April 26, 2021 at 5:50 pm

You realise the estimate for not doing anything at all was 2million US deaths? That’s pretty blasé to say the lockdowns are somehow irrational.

      CommoChief in reply to mark311. | April 26, 2021 at 8:09 pm

      Mark

I didn’t advocate doing nothing. The correct path IMO, is to do what is possible to protect the most vulnerable; direct limited PPE initially and prioritize them for the vaccines.

As to estimates…. that would be the discredited Oxford University estimate that even the authors have backed away from based on modeling errors.

What I am stating is this is going to end up about 2 or 3 times as bad as.1957/58 flu. It isn’t the Spanish flu not even close. In fact as the year moves on the number of ‘excess’ deaths will continue to drop. The reason is the deaths were heavily concentrated in the frail elderly and those with significant existing health problems.

That doesn’t diminish the death or the impact on a grieving family. What we need to keep in mind is that many people, likely most people who died of Rona would have died in 2021 or 2022. Harsh but true. An 85 year old not making 86 is bad but it isn’t unexpected.

IMO, if we make a comparison to 1957/58 flu and adjust for population and the huge gain in the frail ‘end of life’ population; those alive today that would not be alive in 57/58, the numbers would likely be about the same.

The drastic fall in ‘excess’ deaths so far in 2021 supports this hypothesis.

To have allowed ourselves to be led into irreversible damage to a generation of kids education and the destruction of countless small businesses based on some anointed ‘experts’ who have consistently overplayed the situation is not likely to be repeated.

        mark311 in reply to CommoChief. | April 26, 2021 at 8:41 pm

        Hmm

        Ok para 1)

The most successful countries have been the most ruthless and that’s reduced deaths and led to increased freedoms. The countries that have done the worst are those with half measures such as Brazil, India, the US and to some extent the UK

        2) Actually the principle problem was the poor quality coding , and it’s the Imperial college model I believe you are referring too (there was a separate Oxford uni model). This has been verified by other independent researchers.

        3) No idea I’m not even going to try and predict where the totality of this event will be

        4) with the greatest respect it’s hard to know when anyone will die so seems a bit presumptuous to assume even if you are correct in that the risk goes up with age.

        Skipping a few paras

And finally i think it might be best to agree to disagree on this. I can respect your view.

Evil Otto in reply to mark311. | April 27, 2021 at 7:06 am

“The most successful countries have been the most ruthless and that’s reduced deaths and led to increased freedoms.”

HAHAHAHA!!! Oh, sorry, you probably thought that was a brilliant point. Those countries that have been “the most ruthless” are in a continual state of lockdown and release and lockdown again, because their populations have built up no immunity to the virus. Whole cities are locked up tight when just a few cases emerge, often for weeks.

Those “freedoms” are infringed upon over and over again. And it will NEVER END, because at best all lockdowns do is delay the disaster… at the cost of vast social and economic damage.

          mark311 in reply to mark311. | April 27, 2021 at 4:14 pm

          @Evil Otto,

Errr no, places like south korea have avoided many aspects of lockdown because they have ensured very limited amounts of cases. In the cases of those countries that have been charachterised as you suggest sure its been difficult but they have a corrospondingly far lower death toll. The fact is that the US has done particularly badly.

      randian in reply to mark311. | April 26, 2021 at 11:43 pm

The lockdowns and masks were totally irrational once it was obvious that only the elderly and immunocompromised (recent chemotherapy and the like) are at serious risk from covid. It was obvious after a month or so.

        mark311 in reply to randian. | April 27, 2021 at 6:57 am

There has been a strong correlation between lockdown and reduced cases so I’m not clear what irrational about them? The net benefit of masks is positive although it’s really entwined in a broader package of measures but again the data supports there use as well.

Same states are more likely to have population deficient in vitamin D (due to lattitude), which is crucial to survival of the disease, but all we talk about is the vaccines and lockdown policies

CommoChief in reply to jlronning. | April 26, 2021 at 8:41 pm

Very true. That plus better weather sooner in the calendar for the ‘sunbelt/South’ and people could comfortably go outside where the breeze and sunlight significantly reduce or eliminate Rona.

Even Fauchi remarked he personally took 8,000 IU of vitamin d …

jlronning in reply to CommoChief. | April 27, 2021 at 8:18 am

Yes – odd that he mentioned that only once, and in an “Oh by the way” sort of way, not, “This can keep you from dying. ” It’s like all that our public institutions can do is serve the interests of the drug companies.
